New printing support in V5R1

I took the following from several sources, so I apologize for a little
repetition.
There have been a number of questions about converting SAP print to PDF and
I thought I might as well talk about an IBM product that does this.

In the continuing saga of how to convert spool files to Adobe Acrobat
PDF files, d not forget IBM's V5R1 release of Infoprint
Server for iSeries, which includes the following features:

a. A comprehensive, integrated PDF server

b. Integrated e-mail support for PDF output

c. Support for producing Web-ready AFP output via a new command,
Create Advanced Function Printing Data (CRTAFPDTA); this support
ensures that AFP output sent to a browser has all of the page
components (e.g., fonts, page segments, overlays) required to fully
resolve the document or report. (This new function also provides for
the indexing of the data within an AFP file.)

c. New transforms for Postscript, PDF, and Printer Control Language
(PCL) into AFP

e. New transforms for converting Web image formats (e.g., GIF, TIF,
JPEG) into iSeries image format

Infoprint Server documentation is available at

V5R1 is the most significant release ever with respect to print and
e-output capabilities. Although the changes are wide-ranging, the primary
focus is "e-output". E-output refers to the ability to create information
output and deliver it to the required destination in the format desired.
The "e" in e-output hints that e-business reengineering is driving the
process. Where business processes typically printed then distributed
information in hard copy, e-business processes quite frequently require
information to be delivered electronically.

The new print and e-print functionality in V5R1 is delivered through a
number of products, including:
Infoprint Server for iSeries,Infoprint Designer for iSeries,PSF/400
V5R1,OS/400 V5R1,Content Manager Common Server
The net effect of V5R1 is to take the very strong core print architecture
of the iSeries-AS/400 and expand its front-end and back-end. Front-end
refers to the creation or composition of output. The new Infoprint
Designer and new Java print architectures fit in here. This front-end also
now includes the network where pages composed in ASCII formats (PCL,
Postscript, PDF) can be pulled in and managed by the iSeries-AS/400. The
"back-end" refers to the capabilities to deliver pages once they are
created, normally going beyond print. This is the area of electronic
delivery and of archival/retrieval, CRM, etc.

For the SAP iSeries customer, this opens up a lot of possibilities. On the
composition side, the existing SAP R/3 AFP Print Aid (5798-AF3) can be used
to map ABAP and SapScript data to AFP. Infoprint Designer can be used to
provide the GUI for overlay, image, and layout design. Alternatively, SAP
applications can output SCS and this can flow into the Infoprint Designer
design process.
Once your SAP output is in AFP format, then you can take advantage of the
new "back-end" options -- PDF, e-mail, web AFP, archival, printing to IPDS
printers, printing to PDF printers, etc.

There are several ways that SAP output can be composed and delivered in
this new V5R1 flow. First, there is the SAP R/3 AFP Printing Aid
(5798-AF3). This provides the CVTPRTDTA command and enables the flow of
ABAP and SapScript data to AFP. The new Infoprint Designer system can be
used for overlays and images for SapScript data and for the formatting
objects -- page definitions and form definitions -- for ABAP data.
Additionally, SAP data can be output to SCS and this is input to Infoprint
Designer for complete document design. Finally, if the SAP output is
already in PCL or Postscript format, the new ASCII transforms can be used
to convert them to AFP. Note that this conversion is image-based so it is
designed for printing to IPDS printers.

Once you have a fully-compose print file (not in ASCII format), you can use
the new e-output capabilities to produce PDF or web-AFP for electronic
delivery. The PDF support includes integrated e-mail or IFS delivery.
Web AFP is supported by the CA/400 AFP Viewer or the web AFP Viewer
plug-in.

From a printing perspective, you can print to PCL, PDF, and IPDS printers
