BRMS & SAP

Hi Barry,

I don't think, that the wait-parameter works correct for you. You should
definetely use the DLYJOB instead.

STARTSAP (and STOPSAP) on remote appl-servers:
You should have a look to the note 93316. This shows a useful solution for you.

Regards

Volker

Speaking of backups, I have two questions about the STARTSAP and STOPSAP
command. Currently, SAP is shut down for our weekly backup only. This
involves 3 iSeries machines and all of the instances are ended using the
following set of commands:

STOPSAP SID(PRD) INSTANCE(11) INSTHOST(X1) +
WAIT(*YES) WAITTIME(300)
STOPSAP SID(PRD) INSTANCE(12) INSTHOST(X2) +
WAIT(*YES) WAITTIME(300)

STOPSAP SID(PRD) INSTANCE(10) WAIT(*YES) WAITTIME(300)

The first two commands stop SAP on our app servers and the last one is the
database server. It appears via the history log on the iSeries that the
WAITTIME parameter is not taking effect and we are suspicious that this is
causing another issue. The history log shows the work processes from all
three servers ending at the same time instead of waiting the 300 seconds
before going to the next command. Any thoughts on this process? We will
probably put a DLYJOB in between the commands to make sure it waits but that
could be just covering up a problem.

The second question deals with the STARTSAP command. The STOPSAP command
has been able to stop sap on remote systems successfully for us as shown
above. The STARTSAP command however will not function correctly for us in
the same type of setting. Is anyone out there using the command from a
remote system like that?

Hi Matt,

you definetely do NOT need to shut down SAP for a backup - and I would
suggest really to leave it up because of the buffers and so on.

SAVR3SYS is a special command, that is usually used, if you don't have BRMS.
If you use BRMS, in the past the DSCR3SYS and RCNR3SYS was used. As, these
commands more or less do NOT work properly, we changed the recommendation,
that you just should do a save-while-active backup with a long time for the
commit-point-search (e.g. 1800 or 3600s) as described in the notes 202593
and 86305.
Then you only should care for not running long, non-committing batch-jobs
during the first hour of your backup.

Regards

Volker

Hi

I recall that there was some discussion about using BRMS to save a SAP
system. Is anyone using this combination ? Do you have to shut down SAP to
do a full save or can the SAVR3SYS tools be used to do a save while active?

Thanks in advance
