EBCDIC to ACSII Conversion - Class or Consulta nt ??

Here's my response to the questions: The ASCII conversion is about the same
level of difficulty as an OS/DB migration, in fact -- it is an in-place OS/DB
migration. SAP requires that you have a certified consultant or be trained to
handle the OS/DB migration because problems can occur. If the problem occurs in
Development or QA it is not as big of a deal as if the problem happens during
the migration in production. So, to help minimize the possibility of having a
problem with production, SAP requires that the person performing the migration
be trained in the process. This is to help insure that the procedure is
executed properly in the first place. SAP certifies these people and then says
that the only way you can get support during the process is if you have someone
that is certified performing the migration. Again, this is because SAP wants
the production migration to succeed.

So, the short version is that the training prepares you to be successful in the
migration and becomes an insurance policy. Like most insurance, you hope you
never need to use it. However, the only way to get support in case of a problem
with the migration is to be trained or to engage a consultant who has been
certified in the process.

Best regards,
Alan

Subject: EBCDIC to ACSII Conversion - Class or Consultant
??

My understanding is to be able to convert to ASCII, you must attend
the class on EBCDIC to ASCII to become certified, or hire a
consultant.

Can someone please answer (or give your opinion) on the following:
1. Do I need to be certified or hire a consultant to convert to ASCII?
2. Is this process so dificult you need to be trained? What is so
difficult?
3. How many people have converted in a production envirnoment
4. Are there many horror stories with this converison or is it stable?

We are seriously considering performing the upgrade, and I'm still
not conviced to perform it at this time. I'm interested in what
others think about this conversion....the pros and cons
