R: V5R2 Performance issue - Production system

Hi Michael,
we have noted slow performance with IBM OS/400 V5R2 on our production system
from November 2 2002(we have SAP 4.6C SR2 ASCII kernel 4.6D 1385level)......in
this days we have tested this slow reponse and we note that the problem (one
problem but I don't know if is the only problem) is about the DB2 engine that
work on ASCII-EBCDIC (or viceversa) data conversion out of SAP R/3 at OS/400
level. We note this with all RPGs applications that run with SAP-DATA-FILE (on
R3<SID>DATA)out of SAP R/3...this application with V5R2 create, during the
access of DB2 tables, a big workload that put the CPU at 99% full without see
any works (with wrkactjob command) that produce this workload.....I think that
the integration of the old ASCII RUNTIME (that with V5R1 was a licence product
stand alone) on the microcode of V5R2 is more slow that before....we have opened
a PMR at IBM for this.

Michael, Please Let us know every news on performance problems!!!

Regards

Oggetto: V5R2 Performance issue - Production system

Hope everyone had a happy new year!

Thought I would give a heads up for anyone upgrading a Production
system to V5R2.
Although, the upgrade to the Development and Test systems from V5R1
did not show up any major performance problems, the Production
upgrade did however. This was on a Model 830 with 10GB memory, >2TB
disk, and 1000+ R/3 4.5B users.
On Monday we experience very high response times (>40 sec average)
and ST03 showed high Wait time and DB time. CPU time was low.
IBM advised some PTFS not on the Info APAR (MF29862, MF29686).
We applied these plus MF29900, MF29831 from the Info APAR to the Test
system and noticed improved performance there. When applied to PRD
however, the impact was minimal.
A test PTF (MF29996) was made available to us to install (requires
special instructions to be followed or an IPL). After this and
restarting SAP, we are back to "normal".
If planning on a PRD system upgrade to V5R2 I recommend contacting
IBM beforehand so you have technical support available if problems
are encountered.
