Parallel Backup with 3 Tapes
Hi Volker,what is the size of your PRD database and how many MB/GB of Receiver-data do
you have to mirror daily (just give me a rough number)?

Hi Franz,
we are using MIMIX more than 5 years and are really enjoying the
functionality.
Our 3 productive SAP-systems on an 830/8 are mirrored to a 730
without any
measurable delay.

We backup our MIRROR-DB 400GB every night
We've been using Lakeview MIMIX for about 15 months now and it's a
BEAUTIFUL
THING!
Even eliminated ALL downtime during our V4R5 to V5R1 upgrade

we already have tested Data Mirror (HA Suite) and Lakeview (MIMIX)
about two
years ago.
Both products were not able to handle the workload at that time,
don't ask
me why. Data Mirrors SE's spent more than 6 month trying to run HA
Suite
with an acceptable performance - they failed. Even the
synchronisation of
the two DBs took more then 2 days, not to mention the tens,
sometimes
hundreds of journalreceivers which still were to transmit... So we
deceided
that the market wasn't (isn't??) ready for perfromant HA software.
According to your last sentence: It's more a question of that we
need our
tape drives for other backups too, so we don't want to block it for
10-12
hrs.
Just for curiousity - what tool are you running?

Hi Franz,
instead of a backup of your productive database you can
install a
high
availibility product and do the daily full backup from the
mirror-database
(we are using this feature for many years).
So you do not loose performance on the production server.

Hi Alberto,
sorry - yes, we use BRMS V5R1 to perform a full SAVLIB. At
the
moment the
backup job runs 10-11 hours every night. Because of the size
of our
PRD
database (760 GB) we don't have space left to copy it to a
SAVF.
2 years ago we have discussed the advantages and
disadvantages of
incremental backups on this forum ( I guess this is what you
mean
with
"...part of data...") and I recall that Volker recommended
not to
use
incremental backup because restoring a system from a full
backup is
much
easier than the other way. Especially that receiver thing
must be a
highly
complicated process according to IBMs support staff...

How use the tape??? With BRMS???
Have you thinked to make xxx.SAVF during night to
place on
tape
during day??? (only if you have space and only for a part of
data to
save so
you can reduce the night time as you require!!)

last weekend we attached a third 3590 to our PRD
server to
reduce
the runtime for backup of our PRD system. We hoped to save
at least
15-20%
runtime, but nothing changed at all - the backup still runs
as long
as with
2 units.
So is there anyone out there already running backups
with
more than
2 tape units and if so, what are your experiences?
