SAP without Interactive card?

Hi Rick,

why does IBM have this pricing ?
Very easy:
There are 2 different groups of customers:
A) RPG and similar customers
B) SAP, Baan, .. customers

Group A is not able to "survive" without a greenscreen and really sticked to
iSeries as long as they want to conserve their SW investment. So, it is an easy
way to squeeze as much money out of this group as possible in order to make as
much revenue as possible.

Group B is different. They mostly had such green-screen applications in older
days and know the advantages of this platform, but now running SW, that can run
in principle on any platform. And this SW is client-server-oriented without any
green-screen-need (perhaps except the installation or system-maintenance). This
group is not willing at all to pay that high prices and would be able to move to
a different platform as soon as they detect, that somebody tries to squeeze them
out.

So, IBM tried to distinguish these 2 groups. The easiest option here is the
green-screen. So, IBM brought out servers with high power, but limited in
different steps for the green-screen-usage. Finally there are servers available
with "0 green-screen".
All servers allow exact 1 green-screen working simultaneously. That means: You
can logon with 10 green-screens, but should press enter only at one of them at
the same time.

As IBM detected, that this was used from people with green-screen-applications
as well, because this group tried to benefit from the cheap servers as well with
redesigning the application to do more in batch - only real 5250 communication
is counted! - they tried to reduce this more. So, V5R2 has a lot lower limit
when using 0 interactive compared to V5R1.
So, people, that use with several green-screens a 0 interactive machine on V5R1
might run into problems on V5R2, because the limit is more narrowed to 0. But, I
would say, that's "working as designed".

Regards

Volker

Thanks Gerd,

So how does anyone run anything without the interactive card? Since
Ops Nav is part of Client Access and that, supposedly, is the
preferred method of doing your operations chores, how do you do any
operations without an interactive card? On another note, does anyone
know WHY IBM is engaging in these predatory pricing practices?

Thanks,
Rick
