Keeping PTFs up to date

Hi Gerhard,

we have a 3-tier environment here (one 740 as DB-server and two 740s as
Appl.-Servers) plus 1 iSeries for DEV and TST. We do maintenance once every
4 weeks.

As a standard procedure all PTFs are first installed on the TST/DEV machine.
Then the SE guys and we are carefully watching the machine and the
applications. When no bugs appear within 4 weeks, on the next maint weekend
all the PTFs are installed on the 3 PRD-machines too.

Usually we order all the PTFs needed according to the Info Apars from
support appr. 1 week prior to our maint weekend. They send us one or more
CDs. When certain PTFs are needed on a short notice, we order them via ECS
line (if they can be sent online, otherwise we look pretty old).

If some PTFs seem to cause problems, we freeze them on the TST machine (or
remove them if the trouble gets too big) until a correction is available
from support. Additionally we check SF98068 (PTFs in error) on a regular
base.

When it comes to light, that a certain PTF is essential to keep the system
running, it is a question of priority you have to decide. If the chance is
bigger that your system will die without that PTF, you probably will take
the risk to install it without further testing. And in the worst case (the
PTF brings your system down as well) you can remove it.

As far as I can recall, within the last 5 years it only has happended once
that a "bad PTF", which has not been completely tested before, had caused
some problems in our PRD environment.

Hope it helps.

Regards,
Franz

Hi group,

I got a question for all you guys having more than 1 AS/400 system.

How do you take care of keeping all your system on the same PTF
level
(SAP PTFs, group and CUM PTFs). Is that a manual process in your
company or do you use any tools/application that does
the "synchronization" for you? And if you have any remote systems
how
do you send your PTFs across the network (using FTP and just send
the
save files over)? And for locations with "slow-speed connections"
how
do you get the PTFs there? Just sending the CDs?

Also, when you put new PTFs on your system are you actually testing
those first before you load them on your production system? And if
yes, how do you control which PTFs are currently being tested (and
should not/cannot be loaded on the production system? I would see
that as "kind of easy" if you have a small group of people but in a
bigger environment that could easily get out of hand.

And if you test your PTFs what do you do when during the test you
need to install a single but very important PTF on all your system.
That could have an impact on your PTF testing.

Thanks for any comments and feedback.

Gerd
