Tape Drives

We have two 3581 drives since july 2002 and have in total had four or five
replacement units (I loose count). The errors we usually get are 'Rear tape
error'. New units usually solve the problems, microcode changes do not. The
replaced units probably get fixed and sent to a new customer?
We usually are able to get the tapes unloaded using the control panel.

While the units perform ok they are not very fault tolerant.

regards,

Tom

Good of you to ask as I'd been wanting to start about them too ... but from
a different perspective, unfortunately.

We've been using the 3581-H17 autoloader (7 tapes) since half a year now.
They were quite a leap compared to the MagStar before it. From over 6 hours
and 7 tapes back to just 2 hours and 1 tape for PRD backup (database size
around 170 Gb now).

The one bad point we're experiencing with them is regular mechanical
failures when the tapes get moved around with a tape actually getting
"stuck" somehow. Luckily most of these occurred on the DEV/QAS machine and
not on PRD so far. Unit has been replaced once but no better behaviour after
that, it still happens around once a month at least up till now. The person
changing the tapes has learned from the IBM service engineer how to get it
unstuck using a paperclip and some properly used force ... 😎

Would like to hear from others using same unit if we're just the statistical
unlucky or if this is indeed inherent to those units?

Regards, Louis.

Does anyone have experience/comments with the 358x LTO Gen 2 tape
drives? They are supposed to achieve 105MBps at a 3:1 data compaction.

If you do, what model are you running?

Are you also backing up all the Intel/network servers on the floor?

We've used 3590 E11 for a few years and have been very happy - but we're
looking for even fast save times especially since PRD DB is at 420GB

We don't have a large investment of vaulted / archived 3590 media (other
than full system saves) so we are in a position to change the media

Thanks!

Doreen
