Application Server Feed Back
Hi Ed,We are curently at V5R1 at OS level with SAP 4.6C and Kernel 4.6D EBCDIC.
We use 2 Apllication servers 270 2-way (with 3GB Memory) and a 820 2-way (with
3.5 GB memeory) as a Database Server. We used to have a 720 as a Database
Server but we upgraded to 820.
As a Development Environment, we use a 270 model with 2.5 GB memory.
My suggestion to you is to go to a 2-tier Environment since you have a 840
system (run everything on 840 since you have enough CPW).
If you can not do otherwise, you can use your 720 as an application server but
you need a fast connection. Since 720 does not support Gigabit Ethernet you
have to use Opticonnect. As I can recall there were some problems with
opticonnect but I can not tell you much on this since I haven't used it. Also
note that 720 models do not have
enough CPW's compared with 8xx or 270 models (as I can recall even if you have
a 720 4way you end up with 1600 CPW's)
Also it is very important to apply all the nececery PTF's (APAR II2833 for
V5R1) and a relatively new kernel patch. (We use 1385 for PRD and begin to test
1444 in DEV)

Currently we are running on 840 and EBCDIC Kernel. We are planning to use one
of our iSeries (9406 - 720) as our Application Server. If you are using any
ISeries as your Application Server, would you able to share your experiences
with us.

more about your company hardware configuration or any good advice?
