HI all,
I been now work with AS/400 sinde the system is on the market. In this time
I get also contact to the microsoft world. And as its is always every
system has it's advantages.
But I have never seen as system that is so easy to manage as an AS/400. We
support about 700 SAP users with two AS/400. Its very easy with only a
handfull of AS/400 procedures.
We are only two persons and not only support SAP, also WEB server, Domino,
Network and everything else you need in a normal bussines, and the we have
problems in the microsoft world then on AS/400.
The question of costs is realy relativ, I think. If you want to buy a
hardware on server -side that is as good an integrated as an AS/400
hardware your costs will not be so much less. And you need more specialist
for the adminstration of this systems.

Don,
You obviously do not know anything about the AS/400 or DB2 and am very
surprised at some of your comments. I run a large shop with multiple
AS/400 's and a very large number of Microsoft 2000 servers, SQL servers,
Exchange servers, Printer servers, File servers, Communication servers, and
the list goes on and on and on. Every time you want to do something with
Microsoft you need another server. I think they actually multiply faster
then
rabbits. With all these servers you need people to maintain them. My staff
on the Microsoft side is twice as large as my staff on the AS/400 side and
that means $$$$. All of our data applications run on the AS/400 where it is
secure. Backups and Index reorgs are so easy that our operations
manager has it automated to run at night. If you need to restore a file
it's always there on an AS/400 backup, 20% of the time it fails on an Intel
server
running Microsoft.

You stated that no DBA is required on the AS400. Who does backups and
Index reorgs. I'm a SQL DBA and that is a big part of a DBA job. I do
give you that the AS400 has higher security from viruses and hackers but
that is due to the fact that there are so few of them. With so few that
means that finding knowledgeable people to maintain this system is
harder to come by. We have people who only work on the AS400 for 2 years
and they still state that they know nothing about it, yet the same
people worked on SQL Server for a month and they think they are experts.
Now that is ease of use.
We also just had to add the new systems to the existing network backup
that saved money on adding more hardware for backups. You can only add
Wintel App.servers if you are ASCII if you have not converted yet you
can not scale out until you convert first.
When I was moved to work in the Basis Department with SAP running on the
AS400 I was excited to see this system that was so good. Once I got into
the real world of the AS400 I found that it took more people to keep it
up and running than the SQL Servers that I have been maintaining for the
last couple of years. At least at the present time the ROI on our SQL
Servers are better with the lower cost of ownership. I would also expect
this to be the case with DB2 UDB.
Now that you can run 64-bit on Wintel what is the advantage of the
AS400?

to add a comment on the ongoing discussion about pro+cons of iSeries
vs. other SAP platforms.
First of all, with more than 1700 SAP installations worldwide, OS/400
is and remains a valid platform for SAP , like UNIX and zOS and
WIntel. No customer should move away from iSeries due to 'strategy
concerns'.
Clearly, WIntel servers have a lower initial price. But there is
more to a platform than just initial 'Price per SAPS'; real TCO needs
to be considered, meaning 'total' cost in the longer term; and here
we see a real advantage for iSeries - - if aspects like easiness ,
reliability, flexibility are valued appropriately.
iSeries' initial cost is clearly higher - but its long term
operational cost is so much lower that it pays off the initial
investment.
Running SAP on iSeries provides solid values and cost savings in
several areas, like:
* Full 64-bit processing
* High reliability and availability ( esp. with internal DASD )
* Easy system and DB management
- no DB admin required,
- flexible SAP landscaping regardless of processor- and DASD-HW.
* Perfect sharing of CPU/Memory resources, via LPARs or 'Subsystems'.
* Perfect consolidation ('harmonization') of:
- multiple SAP systems ( R/3, BW , Test , Prod etc.)
- non-SAP and legacy applications
* Highest security protection against 'hacking' and 'viruses'
... and last not least :
* Integration of WIntel App.servers, to allow low-cost 3-tier
landscapes where required.
It is for these solid reasons that several field studies by
independent analysts (IDC, Gartner, META Grp) have confirmed iSeries
as the most cost-effective ERP-Plattform with lowest long-term TCO.
