Help Required - Performance Problems -Upgrades/PTFs

Sumanjit,

Please don't take this answer offensively -

We had a "non-iSeries" Basis Consultant on-site 3 days a week for the
year prior to our "go-live" in 1998. We had all the iSeries experience
we needed inhouse but knew nothing about SAP. Also during that year, we
traveled all over the country taking SAP Basis courses.

It really sounds like an investment in iSeries education and an onsite
SAP Basis consultant will cost your employer much less than the time and
effort and potential downtime for the organization.

Doreen

Subject: Help Required - Performance Problems
-Upgrades/PTFs

Hi All,
We are on 4.6C,AS/400(OS/400-V5R1).We had an abnormal Shutdown due to
power failure, after that
the performance has gone down drastically, most of the programs are doing
sequential reads as seen in
SM50 even standard SAP ones.
At that time SAP had asked to do an RCLSTG and open the service
connection, but unfortunately we
didn't have the Service connection working at that time and also
couldn't run RCLSTG due to lack of
downtime. After about a month we were able to get the service connection
up an then SAP could log in and
following is their comments-:
I see no serious errors in the system log and dev.traces on R/3
level and on OS/400 level.
Real problem is that you are very far behind with PTF and kernel patch
level, PTF TC02134 + DB-Fix-Pack #09 is exactly one year old,
you sholud definitely contact IBM to order and install PTFs
according to the latest IBM InfoAPAR II12833 and delete SQL packages
after that (note 63037)
Kernel patch 1152 is also from last year, you should first order
the CD 51019715 and switch the kernel with it to 1444, then you
will be able to install the latest kernel patch from
service.sap.com/patches .
If there is an overall performance problem, please contact
your Local support, then you need an Early Watch session.

We saw a couple of customers with similiar performance problems in the
past, due to errors i.e. in DB optimizer, which leads to sequential
reads. But these problems were fixed at least in the newest DB fix-pack
#12. Please follow the recommendation egarding the RCLSTG,

the PTF's and the kernel patch. Even if
your performance problems would not be solved, because it's probably a
new and unknown problem you have first to apply the current PTFs and
patches before you can get support and a fix for the new problem.
The RCLSTG can run for several hours and depends on the amount of your
disk space and the number of objects.

The problems which i am facing regarding it are-:
i)Though we have already assked IBM to provide us with the required PTFs
according to InfoAPAR II12833
and the DB fix-pack #12 , they are asking to explicitly give them the
missing PTF nos , now i dont know
how to find out the missing ones ?
ii) Where and how to Order the Kernel CD and how to get and apply the
kernel patches after that(any
reference docs), how involved is the process and what is the downtiome
required ?
iii)How to estimate the run time of RCLSTG -: System details are as
follows-:

System ASP . . . . . . . : 228.1 G
% system ASP used . . . : 52.5227
Total aux stg . . . . . : 245.6 G

We r also going for the Early watch , but b'fore that i need to fix up
these issues.

Hope will get vital Inputs from u all as i am totally new to this
environment.
Thanks nd Regards,
Sumanjit Chowdhury
