Printing RMTOUTQ hanging - HP Jetdirect Zebra printer

Network admins finally gave in and purchased a different print server (a
cheapo $70 "netgear") vs. the HP jetdirect. I know there's a joke in
here somewhere about how many IT staff and how many days does it
take.....

All has been well for 5 days now - problem solved

Thank you so much for your help!

Zebra printer

I noticed the queue name is "raw1". That usually indicated something
like
a 3-port jetdirect, which I have come to HATE!

Some Observations:

- Remote printer queue name, iirc should be "RAW1", all caps.
- I've never used the Destination Options paramter. I just looked it up

and I would change it to *NONE and see what happens
- Manufacturer type and model-I stick to *HP5 for our lasers and
*IBM42011
for the zebras and dot-matrix jobbies.

The queue name is the only one that raises a flag for me. I have played

with a lot of Ethernet print servers and they all seem to act
differently.
Sometimes it doesn't matter what the LPD queue name is, it will take
anything. Some are really touchy. Is this a genuine HP Jetdirect or a
compatible?

Laters,
Andy

Doreen,

Just for grins could you post the config of one of your outq's? It
still
sounds like it's not the AS/400 to me but it's smart to cover all the
bases 😉

We also have 100 printers - (all but a couple are just marvelous)

There is not any common denominator with the hardware in error cuz some
with identical setup work fine

Of the 3 Zebra printers which "intermittently" error...(doesn't happen
all the time which makes this harder)..
1 is internally located - 2 are in France (frame WAN)

Been speaking with the network guys for 3 weeks on a daily basis - we're
all trying but they feel they've done all that they can (patched
firmware on the printer and HP Jetdirect; changed the network port;
changed the network cable)

Supposed no router on the internal printer -

ARGH!

Doreen,

I have 50 printers with remote outq's (hpjetdirects and zebra,
dotmatrix,
and laser printers) and I've never experienced anything like that. If
you
lose the first packet from your PC then I'd talk to your network guy.
Is
this printer connected over a WAN? Is there a router involved?

We have Zebra printing "hanging" in the RMTOUTQ defined on the AS/400

If I ping the IP address from the AS/400 - I get "no response"

Then, if I ping the IP address from my PC/network - 1st packet fails and
the 3 subsequent are successful - and then miraculously printing then
takes off out of the outq!

Any communications gurus out there that can explain why no response
pinging from AS/400 but then a ping from the network "wakes up" the HP
jetdirect print server?

V5R2 opened a pmr earlier this week - but with the recommendation to
patch our tcp/ip stack all the way up to the latest and greatest code;
we don't want to overreact and begin patching things that do work
