SGEN transaction

PARALLEL PROCESSING -SGEN typically runs 1-2 hrs for us
Prior to the Parallel processing functionality, I might agree it not
worth the many hrs of downtime.

We're doing about the same thing, going from Support Package 16 through
44. I don't remember if I got the instructions out of the upgrade
manual or from the GLS conversion, but you can run the first part of
SGEN to generate a list of what is currently generated, then, once the
maintenance is complete, you run SGEN off from that list. On my SBX
system (quite small), it took an hour or two to run them, but it was
very CPU intensive, so I assume that it will run faster on our test and
production machines.

When we upgraded from 3.1H to 4.6C, we had a lot of problems with
multiple people trying to run the same transaction and generating
concurrent gens of the programs. That was much less of a problem after
we ran SGEN.

Hi All,

It seems there are lots of issues running SGEN.

We will be applying the R/3 46C Support Packages { ABAP (28-44) , BASIS
(28-44), and also APPL(28-44) } to our Production System as we have
already applied these to our Dev & QAS systems and we did not run SGEN
in our DEV & QAS environments.

Based on the volume of the support packages that will be applied I would
appreciate the advice of the group based on their experiences &
expertise whether we should not run SGEN at all or are there any
alternatives to generate the objects as we cannot afford to have the
Production System unavailable for such a long time until SGEN finishes.

Thank You

Hi all,

If your system is fully used, I suggest not to run SGEN. Please run the
SGEN when you are sure there are not so many users or better to do it
when
the system is free. I experienced when the system was free, it ran okay.
I
had a very bad experience once here when SGEN was running while the
system
was used by a lot of users. There were so many dumps, even the SGEN had
been cancelled already. The dump kept continued alost every minute with
message module not found. The only way to solve it was stop the system,
delete the SQL packages, apply the kernel (optional, when the system
still
stop) and start the system again. Don't run SGEN again afterwards, just
let
the program generated itself when it is called.

Best regards,
Agoes

Hi Des,

Last weekend I also applied Kernel 1664 and when I regenerated the ABAP
Objects, I also encountered the same problem. On top of it, the batch
program also ran into a loop. Many times, I had to manually cancel the
job
and resubmitted it. After almost 10 times, it finally finished the
whole
generation. I couldn't find any oss notes about this problem. I hope
that
I can avoid this situation when I apply the kernel to our production .
If
anybody has any suggestion is really appreciated!

Best Regards,

Ed

Hi, group.

When using transaction SGEN to regenerate all the ABAP objects, the job
that is scheduled keeps cancelling. The short dump refers to a function
module not found. If I check the code that was being executed, the
function
module is the "TH_USER_INFO" function module that is being called. The
function module definitely DOES exist in an active status. Does anyone
have
an idea as to how I can get this regeneration to complete?

Thanks and regards,
