to ASP2 or not to ASP2 on new hardware ?

Hi Paul,

Jorgen & Per-Lennart are totally right. Just 2 disks mirrored is not
sufficient or useful for client copies and sometimes in large systems
as well.
IBM really achieves better performance with the new IOP caches when
used in RAID-5 instead of mirroring. So, the performance is better
then. This would be option 3 of Jorgen.
But, you should never install just 2 disks of a RAID set in ASP2,
because this gives you the same risks as to just use ASP 1 for
everything as Jorgen describes in option 2.
So, you should decide between option 2 or 3 (in my eyes 3 if the
system is really large and needs point-int-time recovery). Only if
you want to have a slow system for mass updates because of the
perhaps "wasted" 8 Disk drives in ASP2 you should go for option 1.

I had several customers in the near past, where we detected after a
lot of time the problem because most people do still use option 1.

Regards

Volker
