Balancing data with new disks

Hello Juan!

Having no real experience with usage balance
I would PREFER the simple method 1.

If I could afford much downtime I would
- PwrDwnSys
- Install the Disks
- add them to the ASP(s)
- StrASPBal n *CAPACITY *NOMAX
- StartSAP after the disks have been balanced

If I only can afford minimal downtime
- Install the disks using concurrent maintenance
- add them to the ASP(s) on the fly
- immediately create dummy files until the disk are filled some percent less
than the old ones
REPEAT
- delete some dummy files in the evening
- StrASPBAL n *CAPACITY for some time in the night
UNTIL all dummy files are gone
If you do not create dummy files all new data
and tempStorage will go to the new disks.

Kind regards
Rudi

This weekend we are installing 20 new disks in our AS400 and we would
like to balance all data in order to improve the performance.

We think that we have 3 different ways to balance the data:

1.- Capacity balance. All data will be shared between disks depending on
the capacity. However, we think that is possible that all data of a
table will be in a single disk.

2.- Usage balance. All data will be shared depending on a set of
statistics. Using this system we could obtain a small disk full of data
while the new big disks will be rather empty.

3.- Apply a backup and restore of the R3<SID>DATA library. In this case
all the data will be shared among the disks in a most equilibrate way,
where the data of all the tables will be shared in different disks.

Is it true?. Do you know other ways to balance the data? Is the 3rd
solution the best one?. What will you do in our case? (The database is
400 GB)
