The files are not "compressed" persay but they are smaller in total
than the size of the database. First off you don't include indexes in
the calcuations so that cuts size down by roughly 1/2, then the flat files
are as a rule somewhat smaller as there's simply less overhead.

Someone has suggested 1/10 the size, that is too aggressive. Without
diving into my notes I know that I did an Oracle database one a while
ago that had 350GB of allocated space of which 280-320GB was
actual data and indexes. The resulting export files where 85GB so that's
about 1/4 or slightly better. Your milage will vary, it depends heavily on
exactly
what kind of data you have.
