Update Settings

Description

Updating settings is carrying out Customizing work in a live system without using the Customizing menu. Customizing settings can be maintained from the menus of the application components. However, you can update settings only for certain special Customizing activities such as currency exchange rate maintenance in FI or payroll period maintenance in HR. Characteristically, these settings are ones that need to be maintained often during live operation. The Customizing activities concerned have no impact on the business processes as such, and are thus not subject to testing.

In principle, Customizing activities should not be carried out in a live system. You should protect your production system by preventing Customizing work being done in it.

SAP recommends that Customizing settings work is carried out initially in a test system and transported to the live system only after having been tested successfully.

Update settings are an exception to the general rule that Customizing work is not undertaken in a production system.

As of Release 3.0F, it is possible to protect a productive client from the maintenance of Customizing settings, while permitting Customizing settings that are identified as update settings to be changed. You can find update settings in the application menu.

Effects on Customizing

Choose Tools -> Business Engineering -> Customizing -> Basic functions -> Set up clients, and click the Execute function icon for Define clients. Select the client in the table and choose Goto -> Details. In the Client-independent object changes, choose No changes to Repository objects and client-independent Customizing objects. Set the Category (client role) to Production.

Further notes

  • Setting the Category (client role) to Production in the client table ensures that your test system is not affected.
  • The method described above does not cause changes made as update settings to be recorded in a transport request.
  • If you carry out a transport from a test system to a production system and the transport includes settings which you have maintained as update settings in your live system, they will be overwritten by the transport. Verify your update settings in the live system after transports.
