New Function in Payroll South Africa: Salary Packaging

Scope of Functions

Salary Packaging is a new function in HR Personnel Administration and Payroll Accounting for South Africa. In release 4.6A, this functionality can only be used by approved pilot customers.

Salary packaging allows you to forecast accurately the impact that various salary components have on an employee's gross and net income. By accurately projecting an employee's total package, employers can streamline remuneration to an employee's individual requirements.

To determine an employee's total salary package, the system first checks eligibility criteria and preconfigured limits such as an employee's organizational assignment, pay grade, and appraisal results. The system then proposes all the salary components for which an employee is eligible.

As determined by the nature of the salary component, users can instruct the system to arrive at the contribution amount of a salary component as follows, either:

  • Based on an amount or a percentage entered into the system, or
  • Based on a specific calculation method (as determined by a function module)

For example, users can select for the salary component Entertainment Allowance, the standard contribution amount of R1000. If the salary component Medical Aid (MA) is chosen as part of an employee's salary package, the system will arrive at the contribution amount based on system calculations for the specific MA company, scheme, and contribution class.

Once the salary package has been defined, choose in the SalaryPackaging screen Payroll Simulation. The system simulates a payroll run to calculate the employee's net pay.

After simulating various salary packages, choose Save once the optimal salary package has been determined. The system then automatically updates all infotypes affected by the employee's salary package.
