APO-PPS-RPM: Production Planning Using the Rapid Planning Matrix

Use

You use the planning matrix for planning component requirements for the final assembly of products with many variants and large numbers of orders. You can use the rapid planning matrix to determine the precise requirements quantities and dates for the components required for several thousand orders in a few minutes. This form of planning is particularly suitable for make-to-order repetitive manufacturing with configurable products in the automotive and electronics industries.

Production planning with the planning matrix is particularly fast for the following reasons:

  • Planning is based on integrated Product and Process Engineering (iPPE).
  • A planning matrix for the product to be planned is generated in the liveCache for the APO. The liveCache contains the data relevant to planning, so time-consuming database accesses are no longer necessary.
  • The valid BOM item is determined simultaneously for all orders.

Features

  • Single-level explosion of the iPPE data consisting of the product variant structure, line design, and the process structure
  • Determination of the components required and the characteristic values
  • Scheduling
Takt-based scheduling is used to schedule.
The rapid planning matrix uses the order start date and the master data that you have maintained in integrated Product and Process Engineering to determine the exact requirement dates for the components.
The rapid planning matrix automatically changes the requirement dates of the components to match any changes to the start date that are caused by sequence changes in model mix planning.
  • Aggregation of the component requirements for each period
The requirements for components that are not assigned to the sales order can be aggregated for each period. Planning then generates only one procurement element for the aggregated requirements. You can use a time bucket profile to define the periods.
  • Continuation of planning for the components in the Automotive System
You can continue planning for less important components in the Automotive System. The planning files entries for these components are transferred to the Automotive System and planned using requirements planning. This enables you to take the load off the APO without losing the advantages of the quick explosion in the matrix.
  • Evaluations
The Matrix display evaluation (transaction MDMD) displays the rapid planning matrix and has numerous search functions.
You can also use the evaluations for Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling, the product view or the product planning board, for example, to check and edit the planning results.
The requirements for components that are transferred to the Automotive System and planned using requirements planning are displayed in the MRP list and the stock/requirements list as APO requirements.

Integration

As you can only use the rapid planning matrix in connection with integrated Product and Process Engineering (iPPE), you must use a SAP Automotive System (Release 2.0A) as an OLTP System.

Master Data

You define the production master data for the product to be planned (BOM data, routing data and line design) in the Automotive System using integrated Product and Process Engineering, which consists of product variant structure, process structure and line design. You then execute line balancing using iPPE line design. You enter the iPPE data, which you want to use for planning, in the iPPE access object in the production version of the product to be planned.

You then use the APO Core Interface to transfer the iPPE data and the sales orders to the APO System.

Planning Process Flow

The rapid planning matrix is integrated in the model mix planning run in APO. You must set the model mix planning so that the planning run for the customer orders generates suitable APO planned orders. These planned orders have a start date and end date but do not yet contain any components.

The requirements quantities and dates for the components are determined in the last stage of the planning run when a planning matrix is generated. The planned orders are in the columns and the component variants are in the rows. The APO uses the object dependencies and time-based validity to determine the components that are necessary for the order and puts an X at the corresponding component.

You can update the rapid planning matrix at any point in time from the product view or from the product planning board. You can also update the matrices of several products in the background. An individual planning run is available for this.
