PP/DS: Scheduling and Detailed Scheduling Strategies

Scope of Functions

Finite and infinite planning modes

In the strategy profile of Production planning and detailed scheduling, with which you control the detailed scheduling of orders and operations, the indicator Finite scheduling has been omitted. Previously, you had to set this indicator if you had chosen a finite planning mode, with which the existing resource load are taken into account in scheduling (for example OperationInsert). If you did not set the indicator Finite scheduling, an operation would be scheduled infinitely for the desired delivery date, without considering the existing resource load.

From Release 2.0A the planning modes are explicitly finite or infinite. Now, if you want to carry out infinite scheduling, you have to choose the new planning mode Schedule operation infinitely.

New finite planning modes

In the strategy profile, the following new finite planning modes are available:

With this planning mode you can append an operation to the end of an existing schedule.
Just as with the Insert operation with this planning mode you can schedule an operation for the desired delivery date in the existing schedule, even if the slot in the schedule is too small. To create a sufficiently large slot, the system moves the neighbouring operations. However, unlike the Insert operation, the system does not only move the neighbour in the planning direction but both neighbours, in other words the left neighbour towards the past, and the right neighbour towards the future.

These modes only work - like all finite planning modes - for resources which are scheduled finitely. With infinite resources, the system schedules an operation infinitely, independent of the planning mode which you have set in the strategy profile.

Mode priorities to be considered in scheduling

In the production process model (PPM) you can specify various alternative primary resources for each activity at which the activity can be processed. In general, these alternatives are not of equal value: an expensive fast machine should be working to a fuller capacity than a less expensive slower replacement machine. Therefore in PPM you assign priorities to the modes (that is, to the alternative resources) with which the system is to use these alternatives in scheduling. A mode with priority A has highest priority, a mode with priority B has the second highest priority and so on until priority 0). You assign priority Z to a mode, if you want to schedule the relevant resource manually only.

From Release 2.0A you can set the Lowest mode priority in the strategy profile. The system will consider this when selecting a mode within scheduling and rescheduling with the planning function Reschedule. If, for example you enter C for the minimum priority, the system considers the modes with priorities A, B and C for scheduling. In other words it only schedules operations for the resources belonging to this mode. If you do not enter a value for the lowest mode priority, the system considers all modes, which the system can schedule (modes with priorities A to O).

Schedule at earliest point in time

In the strategy profile using indicatorSchedule as early as possible you can define that operations or orders are scheduled at the earliest time possible. You can only use this setting in conjunction with the Planning direction forwards. Combined with the planning mode Find slot and the desired Scheduling sequence you can schedule operations as early as possible and schedule them in a specific sequence to a resource.

Scheduling at the earliest time is only relevant for the detailed scheduling planning board and for mass detailed scheduling.

Scheduling log

From Release 2.0 a scheduling log is available for interactive planning in Production planning and detailed scheduling. In the scheduling log the system collects the messages, which it created during the interactive planning (on creating an order or on planning with the detailed scheduling planning board).

Maximum duration of scheduling and rescheduling

In Production planning and detailed scheduling, the system cancels the scheduling or rescheduling of an operation or an order, if it cannot be carried out within a specific period of time. This can arise if the system has to consider many dependencies in scheduling or rescheduling, for example relationships between operations. 10 minutes is set in the system. You can overwrite this value in the user maintenance using the user-specific SET/GET parameters /SAPAPO/CDPS_TIMEOUT /SAPAPO/CDPS_TIMEOUT.
