Definition of fields without data elements

Description

Overview:

From Release 3.0C, defining fields is supported in structures or tables without reference to data elements.

Alternatively, the data type, the length as well as a short description can be allocated to the fields instead of data elements. As a result, and if required, the definition of data elements can be left out and therefore also the definition of domains which are referenced in the data elements.

This simplification of fields that do not appear on screens is provided above all for fields in interface structures. In a structure or a table, fields can be compounded when required with and without data elements.

Maintenance:

There is a switch under "Edit" in the ABAB/4 Dictionary field maintenance (SE11) with which you can switch to and from the modes "Reference data element" or "Direct type entry".

Mode "Reference data element":

In this mode, the column "Data element" is ready for input in all fields. This mode is normally the default mode when accessing field maintenance, unless there are only fields for which the type/length is maintained but no data elements. Thus "Reference data element" is also the default mode when creating a new structure or table. The functions "New fields" or "Insert field" cause the column "Data element" to be ready for input in new field lines.

Mode "Direct type entry":

causes the columns "Type", "Length" and "Short description" to be ready for input in fields to which no data element has been allocated. This mode is only the default mode when accessing Field maintenance if there are no fields that reference a data element and at least one field has allocated type and length. The functions "New fields" or "Insert field" cause the columns "Type", "Length" and "Short description" to be ready for input in the new field lines.
Fields with data type DEC:
In fields with the data type DEC, the number of decimal places must still be entered. These can be entered in fields without data elements in the field attributes (double-click on Field name -> Fill the field "Decimal places" in the detail screen Field attributes).

Restrictions:

The following restrictions concerning functionality are valid for fields without data elements:
- Foreign key maintenance is not possible in fields without data elements

- they cannot be used in matchcode objects and therefore also cannot be used in matchcode IDs

- Fields without data elements should not be used on screens,
since neither Field label nor F1 or F4 Help are not available for these fields.

In particular, it is not possible to specify values.
- If it should be made sure that fields in different structures or tables have the same type and length and that there is an automatic adjustment for changes in type or length in affected fields in these structures or tables, then fields cannot be used for this without data elements.

The automatic adjustment for changes in type or length is only
ensured if data elements that reference the same domain are allocated to the fields.
A change in type or length in the
domain causes the affected fields to be automatically adjusted.
This is triggered by domain activation.
