Bounce Management (new)

Use

If you have implemented SAP CRM 4.0 Add-On for Service Industries, this release note is not relevant for you.

As of SAP CRM 5.0, there is a new function for recognizing and processing marketing e-mails that could either not be delivered and are returned as an automatic response mail to the sender, or mails that could be delivered but cannot be seen as a response mail as such. (for example, out of office replies) These automated response mails are known as'bounces'. From a reporting perspective, it is important to be able to differentiate between these automated e-mails and those that are actual responses to the original marketing e-mail.

Bounces can either be permanent or temporary bounces. There can be many reasons as to why the e-mail was not delivered: on the one hand, the e-mail address may have been invalid (permanent bounce), and on the other hand, there could be a temporary problem, such as mail server overload (temporary bounce). In the first instance, resending the mail is pointless and follow-up steps could be to delete the e-mail address or to attempt to update it. In the second instance, resending the e-mail at a later date my be successful. One possible follow-up step could therefore be to resend the e-mail.

Using a graphical editor, you can determine rules that define how the execution of such steps is triggered. For this purpose, the category editor and the rule editor of the E-Mail Response Management Systems (ERMS) are available. In the category editor, a category hierarchy for the different types of bounce is created. The rules for follow-up processing are then defined based on these categories.
