Mobile Engine for Offline Mobile Scenarios

Use

As of Enterprise Buyer professional edition Release 3.0, the Mobile Engine provides a platform-independent framework for the new offline mobile scenarios (see New Offline Mobile Scenarios for Enterprise Buyer). Using the Mobile Engine, mobile devices such as palmtop computers, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), and laptops can run business applications offline and synchronize data with any SAP system via a standard Internet connection.

The Mobile Engine is role-based and is fully integrated into mySAP Workplace. The user has a personalized start page that is generated automatically on the basis of the services assigned to the user. No administrative activity is required on the mobile device; installation and update of applications take place automatically.

Benefits of Using the Mobile Engine

Using the Mobile Engine for offline applications on Enterprise Buyer provides the following benefits:

  • Platform independence
The Mobile Engine is fully based on Java technology and runs on any platform supporting Java (version 1.1.4).
  • User interface represented by built-in browser
Since the Mobile Engine can generate any kind of plain markup language, no proprietary browser has to be installed on the device. Furthermore, browser pages can be adjusted easily.
  • Easy switch between online and offline
  • Since the Mobile Engine uses an identical programming model to desktop scenarios (for example, ITS flow logic), it allows you to run the same applications offline and online. This allows for post-processing of submitted data in case of errors.

  • If an online connection is needed within an offline application, for example, to carry out an online ATP check or to get pricing information, this connection is established automatically within the Mobile Engine without the user having to explicitly request such a connection.

  • Single gateway for all mobile scenarios
The Mobile Engine is fully integrated into the mySAP Mobile Workplace and, therefore, perfectly integrates with all other kinds of scenarios.
  • Built-in data storage and synchronization features
As the Mobile Engine offers a variety of application program interfaces (APIs) for storing data locally on the device and synchronizing data with an SAP system, application developers do not need to handle any device-specific dependencies.
  • Ease of deployment
Console on Enterprise Buyer system provides a comprehensive set of features:
  • Overview of applications per user and device

Shows which offline applications are installed on a mobile device and which should be installed based the assigned roles and personally assigned offline applications.
  • Version management defines the current version of an offline application

  • Possibility to add offline applications for a user manually (for testing purposes, for example)

  • Display of error logs sent by mobile device
