Packaging Logistics

Description

The new functions provided by packaging logistics enable you to manage packaging materials in your R/3 system, to pack goods automatically using packing instructions, and to display the movements of packed materials.

Some industries use mainly recyclable packaging materials that circulate between business partners as returnable packaging. Using packaging logistics, you can display these exchange relationships using returnable packaging accounts. You can also manage the stocks of a particular reusable packaging material at plant or storage location level.

The new object, the handling unit, represents physical packages in R/3. A handling unit consists of a load carrier, one or more packed goods, and any number of auxiliary packaging materials. Each handling unit has a unique identification number that is printed onto a material tag as a barcode.

The customer specifies which materials are to pack in which quantity into a particular packaging, in other words a handling unit. These requirements are represented by a packing instruction. You can use packing instructions to create handling units automatically.

You use Handling Unit Management to control logistics processes using handling units. Here, you do not consider the movements of individual materials, instead you display the movements of the handling units that contain these materials.

Functions

  • You can use account postings to display the movements of reusable packaging materials that are circulating as returnable packaging. The balance of the account represents the exchange balance between the business partners.
  • For each inbound or outbound delivery of empties or handling units to or from your business partners, the system automatically creates an account posting record in the corresponding returnable packaging account. This account is the basis for comparing accounts.
  • You can manage a returnable packaging account for one account holder (individual account) or for multiple account holders (joint account).
  • You can summarize the stocks of a returnable packaging that you have to a pool, in order to display the plant stock at different storage locations.
  • You can send or receive statements for returnable packaging accounts via EDI that you can then use as the basis for an account comparison.
  • Various evaluations enable you to display account statuses and account postings.
  • You can pack in production, shipping, and in goods receipt, and can confirm at the same time.
  • The system uses packing instructions to generate proposals for handling units, which you can then confirm or change when you enter the packing data.
  • The system automatically finds the packing instruction according to the combination of search criteria (for example, material or material and goods recipient) you have specified in Customizing.
  • In a packing instruction, you can specify the details of the materials to pack and the corresponding packaging.
  • You use HUM and handling units to show logistics processes. The movement of a handling unit implies the movement of the materials contained in the handling unit.
  • You can generate handling units in production (for example, in the last work step).
  • If you want, the system creates delivery items for the packaging material contained in the handling unit.
  • The system enables you to print standard material tags.
  • You can use online transactions to enter packing data and to confirm handling units in repetitive manufacturing.
  • You can use an evaluation report to construct an overview of the handling units.
