Import Programs for US Postal Data

Description

As of Release 4.01, two programs are available for importing USPS (United States Postal Service) data.
This data is available on the CD 'Address Information System/Address Management System, Volume 1' in compressed form and must be unpacked before further processing. The disk space required amounts to approximately 9 gigabytes.

The first program imports the City State Product File (CSP file), which contains cities, ZIP codes, ZIP code-city assignments and aliases for streets.
The second program imports the ZIP+4 file, containing streets, ZIP codes, ZIP code-city assignments and P.O. boxes.

The CSP file is provided as a data file and can be processed as such, whereas the ZIP+4 files are provided as 928 individual files. These files are subject to the following naming convention (applies July 1998):

  • File name = XXX.TXT where XXX stands for the first three characters in the ZIP code whose data is contained in the file.

This naming convention is used by the import program for the ZIP+4 files to generate the file names sequentially and process the files in succession.

Both import programs can be restarted at any time.

Changes to the Interface

The import programs can be found in customizing under Tools -> Data transfer.

The program for transferring cities (RJSCSPALL) must be processed before the program for transferring streets (RJSZIP4ALL). To code the addresses correctly, you must run program RJSHERKKZSTR as the final step in data transfer.
