Additions to shipment cost calculation

Description

As of Release 4.5A, the following additions have been made to shipment cost calculation:

Multi-dimensional pricing scales

It is now possible to maintain multi-dimensional shipment rates and to represent the usual rate tables used in the area of shipment costing, including both geographical (e.g. distance, rate zone) and quantity- related components (e.g. weight, volumes) of the shipment.

To define these multi-dimensional conditions, several scales are assigned to a single condition. The scales can now be defined independently of the condition in question as their own master data and assigned to several condition types. When a condition record is created, the scales assigned to the condition type appear as proposal values. You can still replace the proposed scales with different scales, if required.

To represent a two-dimensional shipment condition, you assign two scales to a condition type. You can assign a maximum of three scales, which represent a three-dimensional condition. An example of when you could use this would be if you wanted to apply the postal code for the departure point, the postal code for the destination and the gross weight in the scale basis for the corresponding condition. You can enter for the postal code that only the first two digits are to be taken into account.

You can also specify a calculation type per scale level, that determines whether a relative amount or an absolute amount is to be calculated for the scale level in question. For example, you could determine an absolute price of 250 USD up to a certain weight and then specify a further relative price per scale level for each subsequent 100kg. You can also define minimum and maximum prices per scale level.

Break weight calculation

The break weight calculation is required for many shipment contracts. It is used to determine at what point it is better to calculate a higher weight in order to move up to a higher and more favorable scale level.

Example:

You have agreed on shipment prices for which the scale level 5 to 10 tons gives a price of 6 USD per 100kg, but the scale level of 10 to 15 tons gives just 5 USD per 100kg.

These are from-scales. I.e., the price for the second scale level is determined from 10 tons.

If you have a shipment of 9 tons, the system uses the break weight calculation to work out that it would be more favourable for the customer to order 10 tons (=500 USD) rather than 9 tons (=540 USD). The break weight is the weight from which it is more favorable to settle for 10 rather than the actual weight ordered. In this example, the break weight falls between 8.3 and 8.4 tons.

During break weight calculation, you need to use two condition types. The first is used for 'normal' calculation of the shipment costs. The second is for calculating the shipment costs at the next scale level. An exclusion procedure is then used to compare the two values calculated and then to determine the most favorable.

The second condition type refers to the first condition type (set via the fields Condition type reference and Application reference; in the IMG, see: define condition types). This means that the second condition type uses the same condition records as the first condition type. When assigning the scales, you only select the break weight indicator for the second condition type. This indicator ensures that the next scale level is calculated for the shipment costs too. Two calculations are carried out: One 'normal' calculation and a second calculation at the next scale level. The system then compares the results. You must define a condition exclusion group, assign both condition types to the exclusion group and select an exclusion procedure e.g. Most favorable of the condition types. You then assign the exclusion procedure to your pricing procedure.

If you want to apply surcharges and discounts before the two calculations have been made, define two exclusion groups and and assign a condition type plus surcharges/discounts from an exclusion group to each of them. Select the exclusion group Most favorable of the exclusion groups. In the IMG, see: Condition exclusion for groups of conditions.

Additional calculation sources

From 4.0B it was possible to select the calculation sources for shipping units. This allowed a shipment cost item to be calculated for all shipping units. As of 4.5A, two new calculation sources are available:

  • Calculation source F = per shipping unit.
Calculation per individual shipping unit. This could be used when shipping packages, for example.
  • Calculation source E = Shipping unit incl. delivery item
The shipment costs are calculated with reference to the shipping unit and the contents.
