Retail: New Functions in the Material Master for Retail
Description
As a result of requirements from the retail sector (SAP Retail), Release 4.0A includes the following new functions:
- Internal Number Assignment for Generic Materials
- Customer Exits for Number Assignment
- Search Help by Material Category
- Integrated Data Transfer
Internal Number Assignment for Generic Materials
In the retail material master, the numbers of generic materials can now also be assigned internally by the system. The same number range is used as for single materials.
Customer Exits for Number Assignment
Customer enhancement MGW00002 contains three customer exits that you can use for the following purposes:
- To change material numbers entered externally by users
- To assign material numbers internally by customer programs
- To assign numbers for the variants of a generic material internally by customer programs
For more information, see the documentation for SAP Enhancement MGW00002.
Search Help by Material Category
The collective search help for a material (MAT1) now also contains a search help (short cut J) allowing you to search for materials by material category.
Integrated Data Transfer
One of the first steps required for putting the SAP R/3 Retail System into operation is normally to transfer material data from a legacy system. This is because it is not normally possible to re-create the materials manually since there are so many of them.
If your retail system is a distributed system, it is also necessary to exchange data between these systems. Other scenarios making it necessary to distribute material master data are as follows:
- Transfer of material data from an R/3 system or R/2 system
- The legacy system can, of course, be an R/3 system or R/2 system with industry materials. During data transfer, the system converts the industry materials into retail materials. However, this only applies in the case of different systems. To convert industry materials into retail materials in the same system, you must use program RMMMMPOI.
- Distribution of changed and/or re-created material data between R/3 systems, for example, an information system located on a separate computer
- Supply of legacy systems or non-SAP systems with changed and/or re-created material data
- Supply of data to sites with a separate system, for example, when commissioning a store
- Transfer of data from data pools
- Targeted distribution of materials (manual sending)
In the SAP R/3 Retail System, Application Link Enabling (ALE) is used to transfer and distribute data. This technique is the same for all SAP applications and is used in the R/3 Retail System to distribute different kinds of master data and transaction data via defined interfaces known as IDocs.
