WebDAV Interface for cProject Suite (New)

Use

As of cProject Suite 4.00, you can use the interface for Web-Based Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV). This interface replaces the integration with Microsoft Windows File Explorer that you used up to now. The WebDAV interface is flexible and standardized and can provide a connection to SAP Knowledge Management in the Enterprise Portal (application component EP-KM) or to another WebDAV-enabled application.

The WebDAV interface provides you with more functions than the integration with Microsoft Windows File Explorer, for example, project participants can switch between different views or drag and drop objects from a source to a target structure.

The WebDAV interface is defined in such a way that all hierarchical project and collaboration structures that have been checked in, are transferred to a WebDAV-enabled application. The hierarchical structures are displayed as file structures and the project participants can evaluate them as required and update the content of the documents in all integrated repositories. This accelerates the flow of information and is a basic requirement for the successful completion of a project.

Hierarchical Structures

The hierarchical structures are made up of the following elements:

  • Project structure
  • Project elements: Project definition, phase, checklist, checklist item, task

  • Folders and documents

  • Collaboration structure
  • Collaboration, work area

  • Entry folder, folders, and documents

The project participants are given read access to the metadata (attributes) of these objects. It is possible to have write access to folders and the linked documents.

You can link a WebDAV-enabled application (WebDAV client) to an entry object in such a way that only the hierarchy below the entry object is visible. The following can be used as entry objects:

  • Project structure: Project definition, phase, checklist, checklist item, task
  • Collaboration structure: Collaboration, work area, access folder, folder

WebDAV-Enabled Applications

This interface supports the following WebDAV-enabled applications:

  • WebDAV Repository Manager in Knowledge Management (KM) in the Enterprise Portal
  • Applications that link the Microsoft Windows File Explorer to a WebDAV interface

WebDAV Repository Manager in KM in the Enterprise Portal

KM provides the project participants in the SAP Enterprise Portal with a central, role-specific starting point for project information. These objects can physically be checked in to different repositories, such as WebDAV-enabled cProjects and cFolders systems. KM comprises, for example, the Content Management (CM) and Search and Classification (TREX) components that bring this scattered information into one knowledge base.

Content Management exchanges data with a WebDAV-enabled system using the WebDAV Repository Manager. This Repository Manager provides other portal applications with access to the objects in the cProjects and cFolders repositories and allows them to be processed.
Examples:

  • Search and classification functions enable you to access information quickly and easily.
  • Functions on the user interface (SAP Enterprise Portal) enable you to display and edit objects using the integrated KM.

Applications that link the Microsoft Windows File Explorer to a WebDAV interface

An external application can also be used as a WebDAV client (for example, Xythos client) for linking the Microsoft Windows File Explorer to the WebDAV interface. In this integration solution, a project participant finds the project and collaboration structures in the same way as in the local file system on his or her PC.

Functions

All Knowledge Management and WebDAV client functions are available via a browser and can be executed intuitively and flexibly in the same way as in the Microsoft Windows File Explorer. Project participants navigate in folder structures in the same way as on a file server.

If a project participant has authorization to edit folders or documents, these objects are updated on the server itself. Lock mechanisms support working in groups and prevent data from being accidentally overwritten.

You can execute the following functions:

  • Display folders and documents
Once a project participant has selected the entry object, the system loads the structure. The detail view of a selected object provides the project participant with general metadata (attributes), such as, name, description, date created, and date changed. Depending on the integrated WebDAV client, the project participant can display other attributes via the context menu, if necessary. For documents, the system displays metadata with content.
  • Create folders and documents
A project participant creates a new folder or document for a selected object. The steps to be performed depend on the WebDAV client.
  • Change documents
A project participant changes the content of a document.
  • Delete folders and documents
A project participant deletes the selected object. The system deletes all subobjects for a folder and all versions that exist in the repository for a document.
  • Rename and copy folders and documents
A number of different checks take place in these processes. If, for example, a project participant copies a folder, the system also copies all subobjects. If an object with the same name already exists in the target folder, the system makes this known. If several versions of a document exist, the system copies only the current version.

Effects on Existing Data

Effects on System Administration

The project participants must have authorization to carry out the individual activities.
