Capacity-Based Kanban Calculation in the Case of In-House Production (New)

Use

As of SAP Enhancement Package 5 for SAP ERP 6.0 (SAP_APPL 605), business function Kanban Enhancements for Lean Manufacturing, you can take account of the available capacity of critical work centers in the kanban calculation in the case of in-house production.

Previously, in the kanban calculation, the system always assumed that infinite capacities were available at the required work centers. In reality, this is frequently not the case.

As of this enhancement package, you can specify that the system is to carry out the kanban calculation taking available capacities into account. The capacity-based kanban calculation can be used for materials manufactured in-house that are produced at a bottleneck work center.

In the kanban calculation, the system now performs the following additional steps:

  • The system calculates the capacity requirements for all control cycles that consume the available capacity of the same work center (planning work center).
  • The system checks whether the available capacity is sufficient to manufacture the planned production quantity.
  • The system calculates trigger points for individual control cycles or for certain groups of control cycles with the aim of reducing setup times.

The trigger point shows the number of kanban containers that have the status Waiting. This number must first be reached before the system can trigger replenishment. Use of the trigger point affords the following advantages:

Normally, the kanban containers are set to "Empty" on an individual basis, so that the replenishment signals all arrive at the supply source singly and in any order. This leads to a large number of small lots and - in consequence - frequent resetups. You can now reduce setup times by initially setting the individual containers whose content you have consumed to the status Waiting. Only when the number of containers with the status Waitingreaches the trigger point does the system set these containers to "Empty", thus triggering replenishment. The supply source can then produce the materials together. This leads to improved capacity utilization.

You can check the results of the calculation using the transaction Check Proposal (PK08N) and also adopt the calculated trigger point there.

Effects on Existing Data

The control cycle (transaction PKMC) is enhanced through the addition of the new tab page Consideration of Capacity. Here you can enter the planning work center and the trigger group, and display the calculated trigger point. However, you can also change the trigger point manually.

Effects on Data Transfer

Effects on System Administration

Effects on Customizing

The existing IMG activity Define In-House Production Strategies has been enhanced by the provision of the Take Capacity Situation Into Account indicator. You set this indicator to activate the capacity-based kanban calculation. The system then shows the new Consideration of Capacity tab page in control cycle maintenance (transaction PKMC).
