RBA Control and Plant Substitution in the Item (New)

Use

You can use the global availability check (global ATP) of SAP Advanced Planning and Optimization (SAP APO) to run availability checks for sales order items in SAP ERP. The global availability check provides the rules-based ATP check (RBA), which can substitute locations and/or products if the availability situation requires it.

Up to now, it was not possible in SAP ERP to influence the RBA in SAP APO, other than by means of the business transaction in the order type. Now you can make settings in SAP ERP at item category level that control the RBA in SAP APO. You can specify whether SAP APO is allowed to run an RBA for an item and create subitems for the substitutions confirmed by the RBA. You can choose whether or not you want to allow subitems. You can even specify that the RBA is not allowed to create subitems for plant substitution, but rather must substitute the plant directly in the item.

The RBA control is available as of:

  • SAP ERP 6.0, Support Package 24
  • SAP enhancement package 2 for SAP ERP 6.0, support package 14
  • SAP enhancement package 3 for SAP ERP 6.0, support package 13
  • SAP enhancement package 4 for SAP ERP 6.0, support package 14
  • SAP enhancement package 5 for SAP ERP 6.0, support package 11
  • SAP enhancement package 6 for SAP ERP 6.0, support package 7

Alternatively, you can implement SAP Note 1724484 in the SAP ERP system.

Plant Substitution in the Item

Plant substitution (location substitution) in the item is a special RBA variant that you can use for standard items in the sales order. This function causes the system to do the following: If the RBA results in just one substitute plant (for the same product), the system automatically uses this substitute plant in the item and does not create any subitems. If the RBA finds more than one substitute plant, one of these plants is selected and used in the item, either automatically or manually.

Note the following:

  • Once a partial delivery exists for an item, the plant for the item can no longer be changed.
  • During plant substitution in the item, the system always creates a remaining requirement for the product in the substitute plant, regardless of the settings in the check instructions in SAP APO (field Remaining Requirement).
  • When the system substitutes the plant in the item, it does not retain the requested plant. The system can therefore no longer try to cover the requirement in the requested plant if backorder processing is subsequently run in SAP APO.

Plant substitution in the item is also available for the subitems that are relevant for requirements in a sales bill of material in the sales order (item category group LUMF) and behaves similarly: If the RBA results in a substitute plant for a subitem in the sales BOM, this substitute plant is used in the subitem.

Plant substitution in the item is only available if the version of the connected SAP SCM system is 7.0 or higher. In addition, for SAP SCM 7.0 EHP2 and earlier versions, you must have implemented SAP Note 1832839 (or the corresponding support package).

Effects on Customizing

To configure the RBA control for an item category, choose in SAP ERP Customizing Sales and Distribution-> Sales-> Sales Documents-> Sales Document Item-> Define Item Categories. Choose one of the options in the RBA Control field.

After implementing SAP Note 1832839 (or the corresponding support package), the setting for standard item categories and customer-specific item categories is Subitems Allowed, Plant Substitution in Item Not Allowed (space). This corresponds to the previous RBA configuration.

Plant Substitution in the Item

To enable plant substitution in the item, you must choose one of the following options in the RBA Controlfield:

  • Subitems Not Allowed, Plant Substitution in Item Allowed (D)
  • Subitems and Plant Substitution in Item Allowed (E)

If you choose option E, the RBA decides whether to substitute the plant directly in the item or to create a subitem. This depends on the check instructions, any rules that were found, and the availability situation.

As of SAP SCM 7.0 with SAP Note 1832840 (or the corresponding support package) you can also configure the check instructions in SAP APO so that subitems are not allowed. This would cause there to be no difference between options D and E.
