Sales Orders: New Functions in Retail

Description

As a result of requirements from the retail sector (SAP Retail), Release 4.5A includes the following new function:

  • Back order fulfillment using return stock

Backorder fulfillment using return stock

When customers return materials which are unused and can be readily shipped again, then it is quicker and more cost-effective to use these materials to fill backorders rather than moving them back into to storage. This can be managed via the storage location field in the sales order.

  • If the sales order specifies a storage location, then the system will only take stock from that location into account.

  • If the sales order does not specify a storage location, then system will first take enough returns stock from any storage locations(s) within the plant to fill the order as completely as possible, and only then attempt to obtain the remainder from unrestricted stock. (Note that the system only checks storage locations within the specified site. It does not check other sites for additional returns stock.)

So if you want to keep your returns stock as low as possible, you should leave the storage location blank in sales orders.

The backorder fulfillment program is normally run by shipping personnel. They can determine what portion of returns stock is available for backorder fullfillment. That is, they can exclude stock that is not in reshippable condition or keep back a certain amount of shippable stock to build up inventory.

You can also set up merchandise distribution tables to ensure that your priority customers get a larger share of the available returns stock.
