Business Consolidation (New)

Use

The previous releases of SAP Strategic Enterprise Management (SEM) featured SEM-BCS Business Consolidation, which was based on R/3. SAP no longer intends to add new functions to the R/3-based Consolidation, but will continue to support the component until Release 3.1B (inclusively).

Release 3.1A of SAP SEM features Consolidation based on the SAP Business Information Warehouse (BW) -- the component name remains SEM-BCS. Future releases of SEM will offer new functions for this consolidation component.

Release 3.1A of BW-based Consolidation offers the following functions:

Master Data and Hierarchies

You can maintain all characteristics in the customer-definable data model.

You can create hierarchies for almost all characteristics; some of these hierarchies have special consolidation-specific properties.

Consolidation Monitor

The consolidation monitor controls and monitors the entire consolidation process. The consolidation monitor graphically displays the consolidation units and/or consolidation groups, the tasks, and the periods (when applicable), thereby enabling you to:

  • Start tasks for collecting the overall reported financial data, for standardizing the overall financial data, and for consolidation processing
  • Monitor the progress of the tasks for the individual consolidation units and/or consolidation groups

Workbench (for Customizing)

The workbench in BW-based Consolidation is a centralized environment for customizing the consolidation component. You use the workbench

  • During the implementation phase and
  • During live use (for voluminous and/or critical changes to customizing settings)

The workbench also lets you transfer data to the Consolidation System, perform manual posting, and execute tasks.

Data Collection with Uploads

You can upload individual financial statement data as well as other consolidation-relevant data from a data file into the Consolidation System.

Automatic Posting

  • Currency Translation and Rounding
As a rule, the financial data reported by consolidation units is transferred into the Consolidation System in the unit's local currency. In order to create consolidated financial statements, the currency translation function is used to translate the financial data into the group currency.
As an extension of account-based currency translation, the rounding function should be used to correct any rounding errors that may occur during currency translation.
  • Interunit Elimination
Interunit elimination lets you eliminate the trade and service relationships between the consolidation units of a consolidation group. For example, you can perform the the following interunit (IU) eliminations:
  • Elimination of IU payables and receivables

  • Elimination of IU revenue and expense

  • Elimination of investment income

  • Reclassification
This function lets you reclassify values from one accounting object (e.g. account) to another accounting object. Reclassifications can be used:
  • To reclassify financial data reported by consolidation units to meet the standards imposed by the corporate group (standardizing entries), and/or

  • To reclassify financial data that has already been consolidated

  • Allocation
You can use the allocation function to distribute or assess values from a sender object to one or more receiver objects. For example, you can distribute values from one consolidation unit to several other consolidation units.

Manual Posting

The greatest benefit of Consolidation lies in the postings that the system generates automatically. Automatic postings let you achieve a high degree of automation, enabling the efficient creation of consolidated financial statements.

In isolated cases, you may want to enhance the automatic postings with manual postings. It is also often necessary to manually post adjustment entries to the financial data reported by the consolidation units to meet corporate standards.

BW Reporting

After performing the consolidation tasks, you can analyze the data in BW reports. The SAP Business Information Warehouse (BW) provides predefined Business Content (InfoCubes, queries etc.).

Effects on Data Transfer

SAP Note 399334 discusses the ramifications on existing data and on the methods of data collection when customers implement BW-based SEM-BCS.

Effects on System Administration

Effects on Customizing
