Support of Application-Controlled and Process-Controlled Workflows (New)
Use
As of SAP Supplier Relationship Management 7.0 (SAP SRM 7.0), two frameworks of business workflow are supported, application-controlled and process-controlled.
Application-Controlled Workflow
This is the SRM approval workflow framework based on SAP Business Workflow, supported in releases SAP SRM 5.0 and earlier. With this framework, the application is in control over the SAP Business Workflow templates. Multiple workflow templates can be used, using defined start conditions.
Process-Controlled Workflow
This is the SRM approval workflow framework based on SAP Business Workflow that was introduced in release SAP SRM 2007 (SAP SRM 6.0). With this framework, the modeled or configured process, and not the application itself, controls the process flow. A unified workflow template is used, and a process is evaluated by way of a process schema containing a set of distinct process levels. The Business Rule Framework can be applied to control further the process flow.
Note that the application-controlled workflow is only intended to be used in SAP SRM 7.0 if you upgrade from SAP SRM 5.0 or earlier and you need to continue using your existing workflows.

Effects on Customizing
The process-controlled workflow framework is the default framework in SAP SRM 7.0. To switch to the application-controlled workflow framework, define this setting in Customizing for Supplier Relationship Management under SRM Server → Cross-Application Basic Settings → Business Workflow → Select Workflow Framework.
