In this process step, you define planning package types for planning packages that the system creates automatically. Depending on the planning package type, you define

  • Which heuristic the system should use as standard to process a planning package of this type in planning
  • If it is mandatory that products belong to the automatically generated planning package or if you can assign a product to another planning package at any time

SAP provides the following planning package types as standard:

  • Planning package type 000
The planning packages that you create manually in package maintenance in the location product master belong to this planning package type. For this reason, this Customizing activity is not relevant to the planning package type 000.
  • Planning package type 001
This planning package type is only relevant for planning with product interchangeability: To avoid surplus stock or uncovered requirements arising for discontinued products, the products in a supersession chain must always be planned together and in the sequence defined through the supersession chain. For that reason, the system automatically creates a planning package (type 001) for a supersession chain and enters this planning package in the location product master of the products involved in the supersession chain. In the standard system, you cannot remove the assignment of a product to this planning package or assign the product to another planning package. In the standard system, the dispatcher heuristic SAP_PP_I001 is defined for processing planning packages of the type 001. During planning for the products in the planning package, this heuristic calls up the relevant product heuristic in the correct sequence, that is, in the sequence defined through the supersession chain.

You only have to process this activity if you implement customer-specific enhancements, for example

  • If you want to work with customer-specific planning package types that have been generated automatically
  • If, for planning package type 001, you want to work with another customer-specific package heuristic that is suitable for planning supersession chains

Note that planning packages are only relevant if you plan in interactive planning or in the production planning run using an MRP heuristic. Depending on the package type, the MRP heuristic calls up the dispatcher heuristic (planning package type 001) or the product heuristic (planning package type 000) for a package. This also applies if you call up the product heuristic in interactive planning for a product in the package, because by calling the product heuristic, you start an MRP heuristic.
