SAP E-Book

In this step, you define dependent eligibility rules to determine which types of family member are eligible as dependents. You then assign your rules to the appropriate plans by means of a rule variant in the step Assign Eligibility Rule Variant to Plan.

You specify that a particular type of family member is eligible as a dependent by entering the appropriate subtype of the Family/Related Person infotype (0021). Persons with subtypes that you do not specify are automatically ineligible.

You can restrict eligibility further to a subset of persons of a particular subtype by assigning a family member grouping. You can also specify the following:

  • Upper age limits for student and non-student dependents
  • Whether dependents are excluded from eligibility due to current participation in military service, financial independence, and/or a particular marital status
Note regarding COBRA (USA only)
If an employee's dependent is enrolled in a health plan or flexible spending account that is COBRA-relevant, and subsequently becomes ineligible as a result of ceasing to fulfill one of these eligibility requirements, this is automatically recognized as a COBRA qualifying event of the type Loss of dependent status. This is only the case if you are using the COBRA Adminstration functionality within Benefits Adminstration.

You have defined dependent eligibilty variants in the previous step.
