Define general valuation classes (GVC) and assign them to valuation-area-dependent special valuation classes.

You can display and define general valuation classes (GVCs). On an abstract level, the general valuation classes allow the trader in the front office to group the positions. In addition, you assign for each valuation area the valuation-area-dependent special valuation classes to the general valuation classes.

Note:

  • The valuation classes do not contain specific valuation information in different valuation areas; that is, the assignment of the valuation class alone provides no information about the valuation of the positions. In the configuration activity Assign Position Management Procedure, you define the rules for assigning position management procedures to positions. The valuation class is one of the criteria that you can use to assign the position management procedure.

This configuration activity is preconfigured. You can adapt the settings to your needs.

  1. Define a general valuation class.
    1. Enter a 4-digit short name and a long name for the general valuation class.
    2. Define whether the valuation class is used for the current portion of long-term investments or not.
Example: General Valuation Classes
  • Long-Term Investment

  • Medium-Term Investment

  • Short-Term Investment

When purchasing 1000 shares, for example, the trader could determine to which GVC this position is to be assigned. This would represent a grouping at an abstract level.
  1. Valuation classes
Here you can see the specific valuation classes defined for each valuation area. It is defined implicitly how the balance sheet is to be structured for a specific valuation area.
Example:
Valuation Area Valuation Class
DE0 HGB Fixed Assets
DE0 HGB Current Assets
003 US GAAP Held to Maturity (HtM)
003 US GAAP Available for Sale (AfS)
003 US GAAP Trading

  1. Assignment of general valuation class to valuation class
Example:
Gen. Valuation Class Valuation Area Valuation Class
short-term DE0 Current Assets
short-term 003 Trading
medium-term DE0 Fixed Assets
medium-term 003 Available for Sale (AfS)
long-term DE0 Fixed Assets
long-term 003 Held to Maturity (HtM)

If a trader in the front office has assigned a position to the GVC in the short term (long term), then the position is assigned to valuation class Current Assets (Fixed Assets) in valuation area DE0,and to valuation class Trading (Held to Maturity) in valuation area 003 US GAAP.
003

In the configuration activityAssign General Valuation Class to Groups, you can define groups and assign general valuation classes to the groups. The groups are assigned per company code, product type, and/or transaction type.

If the trader uses input help to assign general valuation classes to a financial transaction, the system displays only the general valuation classes of the group that the financial transaction belongs to.
