An area menu is a special type of transaction which serves as a collection point for other transactions. Examples in the R/3 System are the SAP initial screen or the CASE menu. These menus allow the user to access SAP transactions without having to remember the transaction names.

If you need a master menu from which you can call a number of different transactions, you can create your own area menu. The system automatically enters the transaction name in the table TSTC. You then integrate your menu into an existing area menu. The user can call the area in either of the following ways:

  • By menu path
  • By transaction code
  • From an ABAP/4 program with LEAVE TO TRANSACTION. (You cannot use CALL TRANSACTION here.)

Area menus differ from normal dialog transactions in that they do not incorporate underlying programs. This means that any other Graphical User Interface (GUI) components usually defined in these programs do not apply:

  • You cannot append your own functions to the menu.
  • There are no screens.
  • An area menu has only one title (assigned by the system).
  • An area menu has only one status (assigned by the system).

Unlike normal dialog transactions, area menus consist only of the GUI and the table TSTC entry. There is no underlying program and no screens or user-specific functions exist.

To use area menus, there is a simplified version of the Menu Painter. In the work area (Menu Painter interface), you can maintain all menu sub-objects, including the title, menu bar und pull-down menus, function keys, and pushbuttons.
