In the steps in this section, you define the configurations necessary for using EDI.

Using the EDI interface, documents (for example, sales order documents) can be exchanged by different partners, such as sold-to parties, ship-to parties and so on. An open interface permits the exchange of incoming and outgoing EDI messages with the SAP System.

Incoming EDI messages (for example, inquiries, sales orders, order modifications by the customer, and shipping notifications) are converted by the respective EDI format (for example, ANSI X12, EDIFACT) into an intermediate document and archived. The structure of this intermediate document is defined by SAP and represents an SAP standard application interface: the same structure is used both for incoming and outgoing messages. When an incoming EDI message has been converted into an intermediate document, the intermediate document is converted into an SAP document (for example, sales order document) by the application. Outgoing EDI messages are processed in reverse sequence: the application converts the order document into an intermediate document which is then converted into the respective EDI format and sent off. The structure is independent of the respective EDI standard (for example, EDIFACT and ANSI X12).
