The extraction of DataSources from the areas Sales, Service, and Marketing into BW can be accelerated by using parallel processing. During data selection for the initial upload, you can use this IMG activity to distribute the load across several processes within one server group. However, processing in parallel in this way means that the only DataSources considered are those that extract data using the BW Adapter and that are connected to the BDoc BUS_TRANSACTION_MESSAGE. DataSource 0CRM_SALES_ACT1 is one such example.

  • Number of processes: 1
  • Name of the server group: empty

Enter the following:

  • Number of processes
The maximum number of processes for parallel processing depends on the number of processors in the system, the number of dialog processes present in the system, and the quality of the data. Moreover, you should ensure that you do not block any other system activities. Entering too great a number of processes has negative consequences on system performance!
While observing the influential factors described above, you can use the following rule of thumb: the maximum number of processes should be approximately one and a half times the number of processors on the application servers.
  • Name of the server group
You can dispatch processes to a server group. If you do not specify a server group, the system uses all application servers for the initialization.

Other than using parallel processing for the data selection, you can also process data updates to SAP BW in parallel. You can make the settings for this in the IMG activity Maintain Control Parameters for Data Transfer. Such parallel processing occurs as an independent step that also requires dialog processes on the application server. It is therefore essential that you calculate the combined number of processes.

Possible errors:
If the server group cannot be reached during data extraction or if one of the processes generates an error once executed, the extraction process terminates, thereby avoiding data inconsistencies.
