In this IMG activity, you can define generation formulas. A generation formula describes an algorithm that is used to generate the rights owned for an intellectual property (IP). It consists of one or more generation steps.

A generation step contains a rights source and a set-theoretic operation. You use the rights source to define the origin of rights in the rights owned generated. These rights are used as the basis for generating the rights owned for an IP. The following rights sources are available to you:

  • Transaction type: Rights for the generation step are determined from rights-relevant license sales contract items. However, the system only takes account of items:
  • That are found in license contracts for the transaction type specified and

  • Contain the IP whose rights owned are to be generated as a product.

  • Relationship type and direction: Rights in the generation step are determined from the rights owned for IPs that have the relationship type listed for the IP for which rights owned are to be generated. The system only observes IPs in the direction specified here.
  • Reference step 1 and reference step 2: Rights for the generation step are determined from the results of other generation steps.

An operation is executed using rights that come from the rights source for a generation step. The following operations are available here:

  • Union: Rights from the rights source are united.
  • Intersection: The intersection is calculated from the rights in the rights source.
  • Contract Reference: Rights from different contract items are united but not mixed. The item number is used as granting reference. Rights with different granting references are not calculated against each other.

Note the following when defining the generation formula:

  • You must make an entry for each generation step in the Operation field. You should also enter information on the Transaction Type or the Relationship Type and Direction or in the Reference Step 1 and Reference step 2fields.
  • If you define a generation formula with several generation steps, the sequence in which you define the steps is not relevant. You must, however, ensure that you reference the correct generation steps in the reference steps and do not omit any references.
  • You access the definition of a generation formula by specifying a name. This is used as a key field and must start with a letter in the case of customer-defined names and a number for SAP-defined names. Once you have defined the name of the formula, you can create its generation steps. You can use any number between 1 and 9998 as a generation step number. The number 9999 is reserved for an internal generation step and cannot be used.

WARNING

The system does not restrict the changes you make to Customizing in a productive system. Do not make changes to the generation formula and the assigned availability profile in a productive system, because this can corrupt existing IPs.

Release Dates Relevance

The generation formula you assign to a specific IP allows you to control whether:

  • The system considers release dates when it performs the rights availability analysis or collision check for the IP
  • The Release Dates assignment block displays on the IP overview page on the user interface

In this IMG activity, you can assign one of the following availability profiles to the generation formula:

  • 0DEF: Takes release dates into consideration
  • 1DEF: Does not consider release dates

This assignment allows you the flexibility to choose whether the release dates are enabled or disabled for each IP.

The availability profile assigned here is used during rights availability analysis as well as during collision check.

You can also enable or disable the release dates through the product category. However, the system checks the generation formula for an assigned availability profile first. This means that if the product category for the IP considers release dates but you select a generation formula that does not, the system will not consider the release dates. For more information about controlling the release dates through the product category, see Assign Availability Profile to Product Category.

Example 1:You want to define a generation formula for an externally produced IP Film _1. The rights for the IP Film_1 are found in license sales contracts. You require a generation formula with a generation step to generate the rights owned for the IP Film_1:

Generation Step 1:

Number: 1

Operation: Union

Transaction Type: IPM Acquisition Contract

Example 2: You want to define a generation formula for the internally produced IP Film_2. The IP Film_2 is based on the underlying components novel and film music, whose rights owned have been maintained completely. You have also signed service contracts with the lead actors in IP Film_2. The broadcast rights to the IP Film_2 are restricted in these contracts. You require a generation formula with three generation steps to generate the rights owned for IP Film_2:

Generation step 1:

Number: 1

Operation: Intersection

Transaction Type: IPM Service Contract

Generation step 2:

Number: 2

Operation: Intersection

Relationship Type: Underlying Component

Direction: Read Subordinate Interlinkages

Generation step 3:

Number: 3

Operation: Intersection

Reference Step 1: 2

Reference Step 2: 1
