In this Customizing activity, you define general settings for parallel processing.

You use the parallel settings to define whether data within the individual process steps is to be processed in parallel or sequentially. The settings for the other parameters are used by the system only if the active indicator is selected.

During parallel processing, the system combines the data in packages. For each package, an asynchronous Remote Function Call (aRFC) is started. The package data is processed in this aRFC. The aRFCs run in online work processes.

The server group determines which group of application servers are provided for parallel processing. The use of server groups has the advantage that the system, when selecting the instance to be used, forms the basis of the current system load. Upon implementation of an aRFC with a specified server group, the instance in which an online work process is executed is determined at the time of execution. All instances belonging to the group are taken into account.

The maximum number of aRFCs determines how many online work processes in the server group are used by the parallel aRFCs.

  • Entering the server group
Transaction RZ12 is used to define a server group with instance assignment and the temporary definition of value limits for the workload status of the instance. For more information about the different parameters, see the field help.
When you specify the server group, remember that the system distinguishes between uppercase and lowercase. For this reason, use input help to enter the server group.
Nearly all the parameters in RZ12 are specified as percentages. The following exceptions exist: parameters for general activation / deactivation of value limits; the parameter for defining the minimum number of free online processes and the parameter for the maximum wait time after the load analysis in the system. Each instance has only one record of valid parameters. Different values cannot be defined for the same instance in different server groups.
In practice, we have found it effective to set the parameter for minimum free online processes to >= 3 and to use the server group to offer more online work processes than are actually being used. This makes it easier to catch unexpected peaks in the workload and minimizes the risk of temporary resource bottlenecks.
  • Defining the maximum number of aRFCs
You must determine the process number on a project-specific basis. The number depends on the available system resources. No general statement can be made here. We do, however, strongly recommend that you determine the precise configuration in the framework of a stress test.
At the beginning of parallel execution, the system initializes the required server group and determines the online work processes that are currently available. If the number of online work processes currently available on the server group is less than the number specified by the user, then this is used as the guide value for the online work processes. Otherwise, the system uses the process number specified by the user.
