To work with the Market Development Funds (MDF) feature of SAP CRM, you need to define settings for managing the following kinds of information:

  • An MDF program contains top-level information.
  • An MDF special program must be assigned to a unique MDF program.
Business users can assign any number of MDF special programs to an MDF program.
  • An MDF initiative template must be assigned to an MDF special program or directly to an MDF program.
Business users can assign any number of MDF initiative templates to an MDF special program or MDF program.
  • An MDF initiative is created from an MDF initiative template or directly under an MDF program or MDF special program.
Business users can create any number of MDF initiatives from an MDF initiative template.
  • An MDF initiative element must be assigned to a unique MDF initiative.
When an MDF initiative allows for MDF initiative elements, business users can assign any number of them to it.
  • A reservation follows up on an MDF initiative element or on an MDF initiative that does not have elements.
  • A claim also follows up on an MDF initiative element or on an MDF initiative that does not have elements.
  • A settlement follows up on a claim or on both a reservation and a claim.

The overall purpose of your settings is to provide possible values for the fields that are involved and to add customer-specific fields. For information about access control in MDF, see ACE Rights for MDF and ACE Rules for MDF.

Some of the settings are shared with features other than MDF. Follow the links provided in this Customizing activity document to find out where to define them.

Define Settings Required for Type Fields

  • Define types in Define Types/Objectives/Tactics that you assign to category MDF Program in their details. This provides possible values for the mandatory Type field in MDF programs.
In the details of a type of category MDF Program, you also control how a user's selection in the Type field of an MDF program affects the rest of that MDF program. A type with Yes in its Default Open to Partner field causes the Open to Partners checkbox in the MDF program to be selected.
  • Define types in Define Types/Objectives/Tactics that you assign to category MDF Special Program in their details. This provides possible values for the mandatory Type field in MDF special programs.
In the details of a type of category MDF Special Program, you also control how a user's selection in the Type field of an MDF special program affects the rest of that MDF special program. A type with Yes in its Default Open to Partner field causes the Open to Partners checkbox in the MDF special program to be selected.
  • Define types in Define Types/Objectives/Tactics that you assign to category MDF Initiative in their details. This provides possible values for the mandatory Type field in MDF initiatives and the mandatory Type field in MDF initiative elements.
In the details of a type of category MDF Initiative, you also control how a user's selection in the Type field of an MDF initiative or MDF initiative element affects the rest of that MDF initiative or MDF initiative element:
  • If you select Complex Initiative in the Structure field of a type of category MDF Initiative, an MDF initiative of this type gets an assignment block for initiative elements, but no assignment blocks for expense types or causal factors.

If you select Lean Initiative instead, an MDF initiative of this type gets assignment blocks for expense types and causal factors, but none for MDF initiative elements.
For an MDF initiative element, the Structure field of its type does not matter.
  • If you select Direct Claim in the Claiming Scenario field of a type of category MDF Initiative, users cannot create reservations from an MDF initiative or MDF initiative element of that type.

If you select Reservations instead, users must create a reservation from an MDF initiative or MDF initiative element of that type before they can create a claim from the same MDF initiative or MDF initiative element.

Configure How Types Control Other Selections

  • Define objectives in Define Objectives and assign them to types of category MDF Program in the Types / Objectives view of Define Types/Objectives/Tactics. This provides possible values for the Objective field of an MDF program, depending on the selection in its Type field.
  • Define objectives in Define Objectives and assign them to types of category MDF Special Program in the Types / Objectives view of Define Types/Objectives/Tactics. This provides possible values for the Objective field of an MDF special program, depending on the selection in its Type field.
  • Define objectives in Define Objectives and assign them to types of category MDF Initiative in the Types / Objectives view of Define Types/Objectives/Tactics. This provides possible values for the Objective field of an MDF initiative or MDF initiative element, depending on the selection in its Type field.

Define Settings for Follow-Up Reservations and Claims

For each type of category MDF Initiative, perform the steps below to either enable users to create claims without preceding reservations or enable users to create both reservations and claims from an MDF initiative or MDF initiative element of that type.

  1. Define a usage type in Define Usage Types.
  2. Assign the new usage type to your type of category MDF Initiative. To do so, select your type of category MDF Initiative in Types/Objectives/Tactics, open its details, and enter your new usage type in the Usage Type field.
  3. To enable creation of claims from MDF initiatives of your type of category MDF Initiative while disabling creation of reservations from them, do the following:
  • In the details of your type of category MDF Initiative, set the Claiming Scenario field to Direct Claim.

  • Define one or more transaction types in Define Transaction Types and set their Leading Transaction Category fields to Claim.

This enables the Create Claim pushbutton for MDF initiatives of your type of category MDF Initiative.
If you have set your type of category MDF Initiative to allow for MDF initiative elements, the pushbutton appears on each of the elements. Otherwise, it appears on the overview page of the MDF initiative itself.
  1. To enable creation of both reservations and claims from MDF initiatives of your type of category MDF Initiative, do the following:
  • In the details of your type of category MDF Initiative, set the Claiming Scenario field to Reservation.

  • Define one or more transaction types in Define Transaction Types and set their Leading Transaction Category fields to Claim.

  • Define one or more additional transaction types in Define Transaction Types and set their Leading Transaction Category to Budget Reservation.

This enables both the Create Reservation pushbutton and the Create Claim pushbutton for MDF initiatives of your type of category MDF Initiative.
If you have set your type of category MDF Initiative to allow for MDF initiative elements, both pushbuttons appear on each of the elements. Otherwise, they appear on the overview page of the MDF initiative itself.

Define Settings for Causal Factors

Define settings to provide possible values for rows in the Causal Factors assignment block of MDF initiatives or MDF initiative elements in Customizing for Customer Relationship Management under Partner Channel Management -> Market Development Funds -> Causal Factors for MDF.

Define Settings for Parties Involved

For each type of category MDF Initiative, category MDF Program, or category MDF Special Program, you need to provide possible values for the Function column in the Parties Involved assignment block of MDF initiatives, MDF initiative elements, MDF programs, or MDF special programs of that type.

Perform the following steps to provide such values:

  1. Define partner functions in Define Partner Functions.
  2. Include them in partner determination procedures in Define Partner Determination Procedure.
  3. Assign a partner determination procedure to your type of category MDF Initiative in Assign Partner Determination Procedure.

For each type of category MDF Initiative, you also need to provide possible values for the Function column in the Parties Involved assignment block of reservations and claims that follow up on MDF initiatives or MDF initiative elements of that type.

Perform the following steps to provide such values:

  1. For each transaction type with leading transaction category Claim that you have assigned to the usage type of your MDF initiative type, enter a partner determination procedure in its Partner Determ.Proc field in Define Transaction Types.
This provides possible values for the Function column in the Parties Involved assignment block of claims that follow up on MDF initiatives or MDF initiative elements of your MDF initiative type.
  1. For each transaction type with leading transaction category Budget Reservation that you have assigned to the usage type of your MDF initiative type, enter a partner determination procedure in its Partner Determ.Proc field in Define Transaction Types.
This provides possible values for the Function column in the Parties Involved assignment block of reservations that follow up on MDF initiatives or MDF initiative elements of your MDF initiative type.

To enable business users to create corporate accounts for use in the Name column of any of the Parties Involved assignment blocks, you also need to perform the following steps:

  1. Make sure that at least one hierarchy category has been defined in Define Hierarchy Categories.
  2. In Define Hierarchy Category for Channel Partner Hierarchy, select one of the hierarchy categories that have been defined in Define Hierarchy Categories.

The system uses the selected hierarchy category whenever a business user creates a corporate account: For each new corporate account, the system creates a root node for a new hierarchy, assigns the corporate account to that root node, and assigns the selected hierarchy category to the new hierarchy.

Define Settings for Dates

Define date ranges in the MDF Initiatives part of Define Additional Date Ranges. This provides rows for a Dates assignment block in both MDF initiatives and MDF initiative elements, irrespectively of their types.

Define date ranges in the MDF Program and MDF Special Program parts of Define Additional Date Ranges. This provides rows for a Dates assignment block in MDF programs and MDF special programs, respectively. In particular, define at least one such date range with ENROLLMENT selected in its Period Type field or column. This ensures that the Enrollment Required checkbox in MDF programs and MDF special programs can be checked.

Define Settings for Funds

Make the required settings - as applicable to MDF, under Customer Relationship Management -> Funds Management.
