Editing masks are used to help simplify the display of complex numbers. The insertion of separators such as hyphens or slashes helps make a number more legible. In this activity, you create editing masks in which you define which separators are to be used to structure the marketing project numbers. A mask consists of several sections, each of which begins with a separator and each of which is separately defined.

When entering the marketing project number in Marketing, you do not need to enter the number with separators: these separators are inserted automatically by the system, in line with the mask that you have defined.

Mask definition: (0 = numeric, X = alphanumeric).

When defining editing masks, you can also specify that when you create a new marketing project, the relevant number is automatically derived from the number of the superordinate element. To do this, you set the automatic numbering indicator. If you copy a complete hierarchy, then the marketing project IDs for the copied structure are also given an automatic number.

This works as follows:

  1. You create an editing mask that contains one edit section for each hierarchy level where IDs should be created automatically.
  2. This means that you can create a campaign hierarchy with 4 hierarchy levels where IDs are derived automatically from the campaign/campaign element ID above. For example, you create campaign C/2003 as the top node of your campaign hierarchy and the placeholder for this is C/0000-000-000-000. If you then create a campaign element underneath, the ID C/2003-001 is created automatically.
C/2003 is derived from the previous campaign. "-" is the separator you specified in the editing mask and "001" is the number that was counted automatically. The next campaign element will be C/2003-002.

If you create WBS elements in the ERP system, use the numbers of the marketing projects for the new WBS elements. If you use project coding masks in the ERP system, you can avoid naming conflicts by ensuring that these masks are identical to the editing masks in the CRM system.

  1. Define a key for the mask and write an explanatory short text for it.
  2. Specify whether the number of the marketing project is to be derived automatically from the superordinate numbers. Note: Do not select the Autocheckbox if you are using the GENERATE_EXTERNAL_ID method from the Marketing - Object BAdI as it will cause a conflict. This BAdI is implemented by default. To deactivate the default implementation of the BAdI, see SAP Note 1169060.
  3. Maintain the individual sections of the mask:
    1. Select the mask and choose Edit Sections.
    2. Choose the item of the first section for which you want to create a definition.
    3. Define a separator.
    4. Enter the length of the section.
    5. Specify whether you want to use numeric or alphanumeric signs for the section.
    6. Repeat steps b) to f) until all sections of the mask have been defined.
