In this IMG activity you set up the value assignment type in which you can enter the SARA hazard classification, that is the classification of hazardous substances in accordance with the US Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA).

In the standard system, the value assignment type SAP_EHS_1023_034 (SARA hazard classification) is supplied. The class SAP_EHS_1023_034 (SARA hazard classification) with the characteristics SAP_EHS_1023_034_VALUE (SARA hazard category) and SAP_EHS_1023_034_RQA (reference value) is assigned to this value assignment type.

  1. Check the standard system. If you want to set up your own value assignment type with your own characteristics, proceed as follows:
    1. In the Classification System, create a class for the SARA hazard classification.
    2. In the Classification System, create characteristics for the SARA hazard category and the reference value. Note the following when you do this:
- For the hazard category characteristic, assign the key _VALUE.
- For the reference value characteristic, assign the key _RQA.
- For the SARA hazard category characteristic, define the data type CHAR with 30 characters. This definition is required so that you can assign a phrase set to the characteristic.
For more information on defining classes and characteristics, see the following references:
- The Implementation Guide for Basic Data and Tools, section Classification System Settings
- The documentation for Basic Data and Tools, section Value Assignment Types and Characteristics Setup
- The documentation for the Classification System
  1. Assign the characteristics to the class.
  2. In Customizing for Basic Data and Tools under Specify Value Assignment Types, create the value assignment type for the SARA hazard classification and assign the defined class to this value assignment type.
  3. In Customizing for Basic Data and Tools under Specify Environment Parameters in the environment parameter IHS_HAZ_AMNT_HAZARD_CAT_PROP, enter the defined value assignment type.
  • Assign the possible values to the characteristic for the SARA hazard category as follows:
    1. Create phrases for the SARA hazard categories. Note that in the standard system, these phrases are printed on the SARA reports of report category 311 as column headings. Here the system uses the phrase code or, if no phrase code exists, the phrase text. So that the columns do not become too wide, the standard system displays only the first 10 characters. As the standard system is only designed for five columns, you can only create a maximum of five phrases. Examples of appropriate phrases are:
    Phrase Text Phrase Code
    Fire hazard F
    Reactivity R
    Sudden release of pressure P
    Immediate acute health hazard AH
    Delayed chronic health hazard CH

    1. Create a phrase set and assign the phrases to it.
    2. Assign the phrase set to the characteristic for the SARA hazard category.
For more information on phrases and phrase sets, see the documentation for Basic Data and Tools, section Phrase Management. For more information on the SARA reports, see the documentation for Hazardous Substance Management, section SARA Reports.
