In this step, you define calculation methods for matrix guidelines, that is, guidelines that use multiple attributes to calculate compensation amounts. Each method is linked to an algorithm that provides you the value of a specific criterion for a given employee.

Along with dimensions and dimension segments, methods form the key elements needed for setting up matrices. Depending on your evaluation criteria, you can create either one-dimensional, two-dimensional or three-dimensional matrices by going through the following steps:

  • Define compensation methods.
  • Define matrix dimensions. A dimension is a guideline criterion, such as performance results, compa-ratio or length of service.
  • Define matrix segments. A segment is a value range assigned to a dimension.
  • Set up a guideline matrix.
  • Assign guideline values.

Your organization uses performance results and compa-ratio to compensate employees. In this case, you would have to create a two-dimensional matrix.

The SAP System is shipped with a set of predefined methods and their algorithms. Use these methods to define matrix dimensions. If, however, the standard customizing does not cover your company-specific requirements, you can create your own methods by implementing the Business Add-In in the step Business Add-In: Methods for Matrix Dimensions.

Determine what type of matrices are used within your organization to reward employees.

  1. Check whether the standard methods meet your company-specific needs. If so, no further maintenance is required. If not, follow the steps mentioned below.
  2. Choose New entries.
  3. Enter a 4-character code that belongs to the customer name range, that is, beginning with Y or Z.
  4. Enter a description.
  5. Save your entries.
  6. Repeat the previously mentioned steps for any further methods.

If you have created customer-specific methods, it is imperative that you perform the activity Business Add-In: Methods for Matrix Dimensions.
