DICOM Server

The Transaction Bridge enables DICOM-compliant communication between the Radiology or Radiology Process Documentation module and an external PACS system or modality.

The Transaction Bridge is available with a special license. Please address any questions pertaining to licenses to your sales partner. You also obtain the DICOM Conformance Statement for the DICOM services supported from this organization.

The areas of application of the Transaction Bridge are imaging departments that want to use the DICOM protocol for communication with external PACS systems and modalities.

DICOM Services

The DICOM server supports the C-MOVE operation from the Query Retrieve Service Class and the DICOM Modality Worklist operation from the Basic Worklist Service and DICOM Modality Performed Procedure Step.

The DICOM Modality Worklist provides the examination devices with worklists based on clinical orders. The DICOM Modality Worklist is the basis for useful RIS/PACS integration.

For the DICOM Modality Worklist the examination device requests a worklist from the DICOM server. The DICOM server communicates with the HIS/RIS by RFC. The HIS/RIS will then provide the services according to Worklist Management. These services are transferred to the examination device as worklist entries.

The C-MOVE Operation enables the HIS/RIS to distribute images. Prefetching and auto-routing are application areas of image distribution.

The patient identification and the Study Instance UID must be identical in the HIS/RIS and the archive (PACS) in order for an image to be distributed. The HIS/RIS generates the Study Instance UID and sends it to the DICOM Modality Worklist of the examination devices.

The HIS/RIS always initiates the C-MOVE by creating routing orders and transferring these to the Transaction Bridge. The Transaction Bridge then creates corresponding routing orders in PACS and returns the status of the routing tasks.

DICOM MPPS supplies data about the services performed on the modalities. MPPS is used for sending detailed examination data to HIS/RIS and provides information about created studies or series and the examination’s technical parameters.

With DICOM MPPS, the Transaction Bridge receives the modality messages. The Transaction Bridge communicates via web services with HIS/RIS and thus transfers the received data to HIS/RIS.

DICOM Server Architecture

The Transaction Bridge runs on a Java Application server and has a web-based front end for configuration and for viewing logging data. On a Java Application server there can run any number of logical instances of the Transaction Bridge, which serves several systems or clients in i.s.h.med at the same time.

The Transaction Bridge is special software running on a Java Application server JBoss. You must install the Transaction Bridge on separate hardware or in an extra virtual environment which is separate from the SAP system.

A Windows XP/Windows 2003 server or various Linux derivatives, such as OpenSUSE, is required as the operating system.
