In this IMG activity you define specifications for tax periods. Tax periods have to be defined as the period for which a tax is owed can depend on the type of tax. For example, the tax period for the calculation of income tax is the calendar year, whereas the calculation of provisional tax on sales/purchases (advance return for tax on sales/purchases) takes place quarterly.

Each tax period is identified from the following entries:

  • The period definition for which the tax is owed. This period corresponds with the billing period for which the system generates billing documents.
  • The preceding period immediately before the tax period. The system can use the previous period to determine whether the taxpayer has to pay tax or submit a tax return for all elapsed tax periods. Furthermore, the previous period is significant if the interval is changed or there are tax-free periods. This is the case for seasonal work such as ice cream parlors that only open from May to September and therefore only pay tax on sales/purchases for this period.

Tax periods are required in different places:

  • When defining revenue types, assign a tax period to each revenue type in which it is valid.
  • For enhanced correspondence you use the tax period to define by which date an inbound correspondence is due.
  • For the automatic determination of the tax owed using the Business Rule Framework, you define which calculation rules or forms should be used for each tax period and revenue type.
  • You define the form and check rules for input data for a specific tax period when processing tax returns and requests.
