SAP E-Book

In this IMG activity you set up the payroll areas your company requires. If you set up all payroll areas when working through the implementation guide for Personnel Administration, you need only check them here.

The payroll area performs the following functions in Payroll:

  • It groups personnel numbers together for which the payroll is run at the same time.
  • It determines the specific payroll dates.

You must still set up the system controls for the personnel control record for each new payroll area.

The personnel control record serves the following functions in Payroll:

  • It defines the payroll past for retroactive accounting identification
  • It locks master and time data so that changes cannot be made while payroll is being run
The lock applies to the payroll past and present. Changes which affect the future can still be made.
  • It defines the earliest date for retroactive accounting for each payroll area.

You define one payroll area for salaried employees and another for the hourly paid.

Determine how many payroll areas your company requires.

The standard SAP system includes country-specific payroll areas for common employee groups.

Determine the employee groups for which separate payroll runs must be performed. This decision depends firstly on whether you want to run the payroll at different times for individual employee groups such as the hourly paid and salaried employees, and secondly on how detailed an evaluation you want to perform with respect to payroll areas.

  1. Check the payroll areas in the standard system and create any new ones you require.
  2. Specify whether payroll may be run for each payroll area.
  3. Create a new control record for each new payroll area.
  4. Assign the necessary data to each of these control records.
