The purpose of occupational coding is to enable the classification of job titles found within the HE sector to one of 13 broad occupational categories.

These categories have been introduced for HESA New Aggragate Staff Return and are used to classify mainly non-academic staff. The categorie 2A corresponds to academic professionals and is not used in New Aggregate Staff Return, as the academic staff is further classified by Grade.
