Fashion articles are sometimes composed of materials derived from animal origin and especially animals which are marked as endangered and protected species. Protected Species Management (PSM) is a enrichment functionality over fashion Article Master Data, and allows users to enrich the composition data of fashion articles with details of endangered species identity, any empowered protection agencies restriction data (such as CITES protection levels), and document references (such as origin, birth certificate, export / import permits and licenses).

CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. See http://www.cites.org for more information about CITES.

When you trade in products made from endangered plant and animal species, these must be accompanied by a CITES license. Species affected are listed in three appendices to the Convention, according to the degree of protection they need. Materials (such as silk fabrics, silk products, animal skin, fur, and so on) derived from endangered species as specified by CITES, requires documents (such as certificate of origin).

You have activated the Textile Composition functions. You can do this in the Customizing activity Activate Textile Composition Function under Logistics - General -> Material Master -> Retail-Specific Settings -> Settings for Key Fields. This is necessary as the PSM functionality is architecturally designed and built over the Textile Compositionfunctionality.

In this activity, you assign can perform the following functions:

You can assign a PSM code to a fiber. This code indicates the level that decides which fiber code is derived from the most endangered species and this code is attached to the specified article.
Using this Customizing activity, you can assign a scientific name and code to a fiber.
